What are the best wireless Bluetooth headphones?

The biggest brands have been making the rounds recently with their latest headphones. Between Sony, Bowers & Wilkins, Technics and Sennheiser, which brand has the best Bluetooth headphones for fall 2022?

The experts at our Montreal electronics store review the latest and hottest models on the market.

Sony WH-1000XM5: Best wireless headphones for making calls

sony-bluetooth-wh-1000xm5

Equipped with the Bluetooth NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, the Sony WH-1000XM5 wireless headphones dazzle with its ease of use and exceptional call quality.

Eight built-in microphones act as noise cancellers and four others help to improve sound pickup. Calls made with the headphones are then crystal clear for the person who hears you, and the noise cancelling is optimal for you: you are no longer disturbed by your surroundings.

On the sound side, a 30 mm speaker allows you to enjoy your music or visual entertainment with dignity. You can easily adjust what you are listening to thanks to a tactile interface.

And there's one more great technology built into these Bluetooth headphones: Speak-to-Chat makes the music stop when you start talking, then it resumes it when you're done. No need to use your hands anymore, you're completely free!

Sony WH-1000XM5 vs XM4: what is the difference?

The major difference between the Sony WH-1000XM5 and the XM4 is that the XM5 is no longer foldable, unlike the XM4. Also, the finish of the XM5 is a bit more sensitive to fingerprints, but this is purely aesthetical.

The XM5 benefits from a very fast charge and a very good battery life. The size of its speakers reduced by 10 mm also makes the difference: it does not, however, impact the quality of the sound.

The differences with its big brother are therefore rather slight, but Sony keeps offering models that are always more efficient and of better quality.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Bluetooth headset highlights:

  • A comfortable fit
  • Excellent call clarity
  • Hands-free headset

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 Bluetooth Headphones

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 wireless headphones deliver high-quality sound through their dynamic 40 mm drivers. In addition to detailed and immersive audio, they feature the aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codec, the most reliable and powerful codec built into high-end Bluetooth headsets.

Six microphones provide excellent noise cancellation. This means you can enjoy a very polished sound: this Bowers & Wilkins headset is designed to get as close as possible to the sound the artist intended. Its bass is also very deep, sometimes almost too much.

The battery lasts for 30 hours. 15 minutes of recharging also provides an additional 7 hours of audio. Available in three colours - white, black and blue - the PX7 S2 is a lightweight model due to its carbon fibre design. This makes it more comfortable to wear for extended listening and easier to carry.

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 vs. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S1: what is the difference?

The PX7 S2 is noticeably more comfortable than with the PX7, thanks to a better use of the memory form in the pads.

The battery life is the same as on the S1, but the PX7 S2 can be fully recharged in 2 hours instead of 3.

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 wireless headphones highlights:

  • Very fine details in the highs and mids
  • Excellent sound reproduction
  • Top-notch connectivity

Technics EAH-A800E Wireless Headphones

The Technics EAH-A800E Bluetooth headset also features a 40 mm driver and better nuance control thanks to a triple-layer diaphragm.

Its hybrid system ensures very good noise cancellation via both anticipation and feedback. This high-end treatment allows for much better immersion.

The high-resolution wireless processing is provided by an LDAC codec with a very high transfer capacity (990 kb/s). It grants an extremely fast Bluetooth use and does not damage the sound quality in any way.

A headband reduces the pressure that the headset can exert on the head, which increases comfort and makes it more tolerable to wear for extended periods.

Technics EAH-A800E vs F70

The EAH-A800 is the successor to the Technics EAH-F70 headset, an already excellent model that included the aptX HD and LDAC codecs with a 4.2 Bluetooth. The real difference lies in the battery life, which has improved from 20 to 50 hours! This difference is worth it.

Technics EAH-A800E wireless headphones highlights:

  • Excellent 50-hour battery life
  • Very comfortable headphones for the ears
  • Very good noise reduction

Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless Headphones

sennheiser-momentum-4-wireless

The Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless Bluetooth headset is certainly the best of the brand. It competes very well with other models from brands like Sony and Bowers & Wilkins. Although the headset cannot be folded, its slimness, high quality finish and design make it a great choice.

With an excellent battery life of 60 hours, you can extend its battery by 6 hours with a 10-minute charge. The keys are now exclusively tactile except for one button.

The Momentum 4 headset adopts some big changes compared to the previous model, especially in terms of its aesthetics. With a circumaural shape, there’s enough space for the ears to breathe thanks to its oval-shaped speakers. The latter are filled with foam and only exert light pressure on the head, which greatly facilitates comfort.

Equipped with adaptive noise cancelling, it also has a transparency mode to better hear your surroundings if needed. The reduction allows you to enjoy great highs and good sound reproduction.

The Momentum 4 carries an aptX adaptive codec as well, offering a very good quality Bluetooth transmission. Thus, the headphones always choose the best option in terms of quality depending on the device you will connect it to.

This model is equipped with four microphones to make calls, ensuring that the sound of your voice is accurately relayed to the other party.

Using the Sennheiser Smart Control App, you can adjust the sound perfectly according to what you are listening to or watching, including the possibility of managing the sound equalizer. The touchpad can also be changed from the app if the preset controls don't suit you.

Sennheiser Momentum 3 or 4 ?

With its older brother dating back to 2019, there is a 3-year gap between the Momentum 3 and Momentum 4. Unlike the Sennheiser Momentum 3, the Momentum 4 is a more comfortable headset with a very different design.

Both models have ANC, the noise cancellation option, but according to Sennheiser this has been improved on the latest model.

Everything is done by touch now on the Momentum 4, whether to adjust the sound, switch to transparency mode or activate the noise reduction. The sound control is also more precise than on the old model.

The real improvement of the Momentum 4 is in the battery since the Momentum 3 promised only 43 hours. An impressive leap!

The + of the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless headphones:

  • Excellent 60-hour battery life!
  • Very good treble management
  • Multiple connection options

Bluetooth headphones comparison and reviews

It's time to choose the right headphones! Of the 4 headphone models we just reviewed, which one would be a better choice? That will depend on your use. While these headphones differ in performance on a few details, all four brands offer extremely capable models that will delight most audio consumers.

Wireless Headphones Weight Noise Cancellation Bluetooth Codec Audio Highlight Battery Life
Sony WH-1000XM5 250 gr Yes LDAC, AAC, SBC Rich and dynamic reproduction 25-30 hours
Bowers & Wilkins PX7-S2 307 gr Yes aptX Adaptive, AAC, SBC Very high immersion and excellent highs and mids 30-40 hours
Technics EAH-A800 300 gr Yes AAC, LDAC, SBC Consistent reproduction 50 hours
Sennheiser Momentum 4 294 gr Yes 5.2, aptX Adaptive Natural reproduction and highs at the top 60 hours

If you plan on making a lot of calls with your headphones, the Technics is not for you. Out of the four models, it features the least impressive voice transmission, but the Sony WH-1000XM5 will do the job well, as it also excels in noise cancellation.

If you're looking for better sound quality to enjoy your music, the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 perform better than the Sony WH-1000XM5, which is already known to be particularly good in this area.
