In three-way models with a Turbine Head, the Continuum is always deployed in FST (Fixed Suspension Transducer) configuration, eliminating the colouration that conventional cone surrounds can introduce. Biomimetic Suspension replaces the conventional fabric spider with a minimalist composite suspension system whose far finer cross-section greatly reduces unwanted air pressure inside the midrange cone.
Turbine™ Head — Dedicated Midrange Enclosure
The all-aluminium Turbine™ Head houses the Continuum cone in a stiff, critically damped enclosure, isolating the midrange from vibrations generated by the bass drivers below and the tweeter body above. Why has the diamond dome tweeter remained the reference standard for over twenty years?
Diamond pushes break-up frequency to 70kHz — far beyond the limits of human hearing. Throughout the entire audible frequency range, the dome behaves as a perfect piston with no deformation or resonance. No other tweeter material offers this combination of maximum stiffness and minimum mass. Bowers & Wilkins introduced it in 2005 and, by their own account, has not found a better dome technology since — which is what it means to be right the first time.
Do the 800 Series Diamond D5 speakers require a powerful amplifier?
Not necessarily — the D5 models' reference sensitivity makes them compatible with a wide range of amplification starting from around 50 to 60 watts. That said, these loudspeakers are resolving enough to reveal the qualities — and limitations — of the electronics driving them. The investment in source and amplification should be proportionate to the investment in the speakers.
Which centre channel should I choose — the HTM81 D5 or HTM82 D5?
The choice depends directly on your front main speakers. The HTM81 D5 is designed to partner the 801 D5 and 802 D5 — it uses a larger Continuum midrange driver scaled to match the acoustic weight of those models. The HTM82 D5 is sized for the 803 D5 and 804 D5. Using the centre channel from the same D5 generation as your front mains always ensures perfect tonal coherence.
Is the 804 D5 significantly different from the Turbine Head models?
The 804 D5 does not use an external Turbine Head, but the D5 generation brings it a new dedicated aluminium midrange enclosure inside the cabinet — a first for the 804 model. This is a meaningful upgrade: a significant portion of the Turbine Head's acoustic benefit, delivered in a conventional tower form factor.
