Bowers & Wilkins Série 800 Diamond D5 : la perfection se poursuit

Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5: Sixty Years of Obsession, One More Generation

IN BRIEF The 800 Series Diamond D5 marks the 60th anniversary of Bowers & Wilkins, founded June 1st, 1966. Seven models — 801 D5, 802 D5, 803 D5, 804 D5, 805 D5, HTM81 D5, and HTM82 D5 — make up the most advanced reference loudspeaker range the brand has ever produced. This guide covers the philosophy behind the series, the D5's technological advances, the available models, and how to choose the right configuration for your system.

800 Series D5 Hero Image

Sixty years ago, an engineer named John Bowers opened a shop in Worthing, England. What he founded that day wasn't just a company — it was an obsession: to create the perfect loudspeaker, one that doesn't sound like a speaker but like the performance itself. Six decades on, that obsession hasn't faded. It has simply taken new form.

The 800 Series Diamond D5 is the most ambitious answer Bowers & Wilkins has ever given to the question that drives every generation of its flagship range: what still stands in the way of the music? It took them 60 years to make loudspeakers this good. Not because they were working slowly. Because they refused to stop. True sound. Nothing added. Nothing taken away. Sixty years in the making.

Sixty Years and an Unbroken Obsession

Bowers & Wilkins — Sixty years in the making

The 800 Series has been the reference loudspeaker of choice for the world's most demanding studios. Abbey Road, Skywalker Sound, and countless other reference facilities have chosen it precisely because it doesn't flatter, doesn't embellish, and hides nothing. Musicians record with it because they trust it. Engineers mix with it because it tells the truth. Listeners keep it for life because nothing else comes close.

Every new generation answers the same founding question. The D4 answered it with Reverse Wrap laminated-ply cabinets, Biomimetic Suspension, and aluminium Matrix bracing. The D5 pushes the reasoning further still — informed by sixty years of accumulated knowledge brought to bear on every engineering decision.

The D5's Technological Advances

Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 — Form meets function

Diamond Dome Tweeter — 25mm

The diamond dome tweeter remains at the heart of the 800 Series Diamond D5. Exceptionally stiff yet incredibly light, diamond pushes break-up frequency to an extraordinary 70kHz — far beyond the limits of human hearing — delivering outstanding clarity, precision, and openness that very few tweeter technologies can approach. Each dome is grown using advanced chemical vapour deposition, ensuring absolute manufacturing precision that is fully reproducible from one unit to the next.

Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top — Redesigned Housing

The D5's Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing features an elongated form with a longer tube-loading system and an all-new tweeter grille design, optimised to produce an even more free and open sound at high frequencies. As before, the housing is milled from a single solid block of aluminium to resist resonance — but the internal geometry and tube dimensions have been fully reconsidered for this generation.

Continuum™ Cone with FST and Biomimetic Suspension

The Continuum™ cone remains the centrepiece of midrange reproduction in the 800 Series Diamond. Its composite construction avoids the abrupt transitions in mechanical behaviour that degrade the performance of conventional drivers — voices, strings, brass, all of the essential musical content reproduced with precision and transparency. In three-way models with a Turbine Head, the Continuum is always deployed in FST (Fixed Suspension Transducer) configuration, eliminating the colouration that conventional cone surrounds can introduce. Biomimetic Suspension replaces the conventional fabric spider with a minimalist composite suspension system whose far finer cross-section greatly reduces unwanted air pressure inside the midrange cone.

Turbine™ Head — Dedicated Midrange Enclosure

The all-aluminium Turbine™ Head houses the Continuum cone in a stiff, critically damped enclosure, isolating the midrange from vibrations generated by the bass drivers below and the tweeter body above. For the D5, individually optimised Tuned Mass Dampers calibrated to the specific mechanical resonances of each model make the assembly even more inert. The 801 D5, 802 D5, and 803 D5 feature the full three-box architecture.

Enhanced Matrix™ with Space Frame Bracing

Matrix™ bracing uses interlocking panels to reinforce loudspeaker cabinet walls in all directions internally, reducing resonance and creating a more believable soundstage. Every D5 model benefits from an upgraded Matrix design combining solid plywood construction with aluminium bracing, plus new aluminium Space Frame Bracing rails at the rear of each cabinet — highly rigid structures that further fortify the enclosure against unwanted mechanical vibration, contributing to an even more spacious and immersive soundstage.

Aerofoil™ Bass Drive Units — Optimised Motor Systems

The D5's Aerofoil™ bass drive units feature upgraded motor systems derived from the acclaimed Signature range. Their carbon-fibre skin and variable-profile foam core deliver a combination of low mass and high stiffness that remains difficult to match, for a cleaner, lower-distortion sound across the entire bass register.

Aluminium Top Plate and Leather by Connolly Trim

Every stereo model receives a new aluminium top section for greater stiffness, along with Leather by Connolly trim — luxurious full-grain black leather for Stealth Black and Dark Walnut finishes, light grey leather for Warm White and Light Walnut. The partnership with the British tannery founded in 1878 — historic supplier to Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin — is one of the most distinctive sensory signatures of the range.

Upgraded Rear-Mounted Crossover

The 800 Series Diamond D5 features upgraded crossover designs mounted at the rear on stiff aluminium spines, isolating the sensitive capacitors from the effects of air pressure inside the enclosure while serving as an effective heatsink for optimum performance during extended use.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5

What does the D5 offer over the D4?

The D5 represents a significant advance across several areas: upgraded motor systems on all bass and midrange drive units (derived from the Signature range), aluminium Space Frame Bracing on every model, a redesigned aluminium top plate with updated Leather by Connolly trim, and a new Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing with an elongated tube-loading system for a more open, airy high-frequency response. Add to this hundreds of detail improvements in damping, internal geometry, and crossover design, and the result is the most transparent and accurate loudspeaker Bowers & Wilkins has ever produced.

What is the difference between the 801 D5 and the 802 D5?

Both models share the fundamental D5 architecture — diamond dome tweeter, Turbine Head for the Continuum FST midrange, Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top. The key difference lies in the bass drive unit dimensions (250mm for the 801 D5 versus 200mm for the 802 D5) and the volume of the bass enclosure. The 801 D5 is the absolute pinnacle of the range; the 802 D5 delivers the essence of its performance in a more accessible format.

Why has the diamond dome tweeter remained the reference standard for over twenty years?

Diamond pushes break-up frequency to 70kHz — far beyond the limits of human hearing. Throughout the entire audible frequency range, the dome behaves as a perfect piston with no deformation or resonance. No other tweeter material offers this combination of maximum stiffness and minimum mass. Bowers & Wilkins introduced it in 2005 and, by their own account, has not found a better dome technology since — which is what it means to be right the first time.

Do the 800 Series Diamond D5 speakers require a powerful amplifier?

Not necessarily — the D5 models' reference sensitivity makes them compatible with a wide range of amplification starting from around 50 to 60 watts. That said, these loudspeakers are resolving enough to reveal the qualities — and limitations — of the electronics driving them. The investment in source and amplification should be proportionate to the investment in the speakers.

Which centre channel should I choose — the HTM81 D5 or HTM82 D5?

The choice depends directly on your front main speakers. The HTM81 D5 is designed to partner the 801 D5 and 802 D5 — it uses a larger Continuum midrange driver scaled to match the acoustic weight of those models. The HTM82 D5 is sized for the 803 D5 and 804 D5. Using the centre channel from the same D5 generation as your front mains always ensures perfect tonal coherence.

Is the 804 D5 significantly different from the Turbine Head models?

The 804 D5 does not use an external Turbine Head, but the D5 generation brings it a new dedicated aluminium midrange enclosure inside the cabinet — a first for the 804 model. This is a meaningful upgrade: a significant portion of the Turbine Head's acoustic benefit, delivered in a conventional tower form factor.
