Sonos 27: the system behind the system

Your Sonos app updates regularly on its own, without ever really warranting an article like this one. A new option appears somewhere, an action runs a little more smoothly. In short, you don't always notice — and rightly so. The year 2024 marks a major exception to that rule, and not for good reasons. The Sonos app redesign sent shockwaves through the community: features disappeared overnight, the interface was seen as a step back from the one it replaced, and trust was seriously eroded. Sonos acknowledged its mistakes, spent the following months restoring what had been removed — and changed direction along the way. 

It's in that context that Sonos 27 takes on its full meaning: it isn't just a technical update, it's also a signal to owners that the platform is evolving in their interest, and not at their expense — the result of many technical improvements and optimizations accumulated over the years that today make for a reliable, stable, and easy-to-use system. But Sonos 27 is more than a connectivity update; it also introduces new features and lays the technical foundation for capabilities coming later this year. 

What Sonos 27 changes for you, based on what you already own

Before we go into the details of each new feature, here's a quick read on what this update means depending on your current setup.

A system that was already there — and finally has a name

What stands out most about the Sonos 27 launch isn't what's new — it's what has finally been named. For years, the features at the heart of the Sonos ecosystem — perfect room-to-room synchronization, automatic stereo pairing, integration with streaming services — existed without a shared label. Sonos 27 gives all of that a name. The invisible fabric that lets your devices detect one another, understand their role, and coordinate automatically is now called Sonos Fabric.

The number 27 refers to the twenty-seventh major version of the system. By choosing to name it, Sonos makes clear that it manages a living, identifiable system — one that will help users better identify the state of the current system and its future evolution. It's no longer just a static collection of connected products.

What that means in practice: Trueplay still calibrates your speakers when you move them. Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, AirPlay, and Bluetooth work exactly as before. These foundations don't change with Sonos 27 — they continue running in the background while new capabilities layer on top.

The new experiences arriving this fall

Four new features arrive with Sonos 27. Two build on Sonos Fabric to extend the capabilities of your current setup. The other two open the system to artificial intelligence.

Portable surround speakers

This is probably the update with the most immediate impact — both for existing owners and new buyers. Paired with a compatible soundbar like the Arc Ultra, two portable speakers (Move 2 or Play) can now serve as the rear channels of a surround system — wireless, and without manual configuration. It's an installation flexibility owners have asked for for years, and one that will make building home cinema systems in open-concept spaces much easier. 

Note that the pair of portable speakers must be made up of two identical products — two Move 2 or two Sonos Play. Sonos Positioning Technology handles the rest: the system emits high-frequency tones to detect the physical position of the speakers in the room and assigns the correct role automatically. Place them behind the sofa and they become the rear channels. Take them outside and they become standalone speakers again. Returning to surround mode is just as automatic. This feature will be available starting September 8 with a compatible soundbar (Arc, Arc Ultra, Beam Gen 2, and Beam Ultra).

Headphone Linking

With the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, a simple, long-requested idea becomes reality: press a button, and whatever is playing in the room shifts to the headphones. The song continues exactly where it left off. The room falls silent. The same logic works in reverse — from headphones to speakers, without interruption. Linking happens over the home Wi-Fi network; you can also control your music directly from the Sonos app even while wearing the headphones. Available in early access on the Sonos Ace Ultra starting September 29.

Sonos 27voice

Sonos 27voice is Sonos's in-house voice assistant, designed exclusively for music. What sets it apart from the current voice control is natural language: instead of memorizing precise commands, you speak the way you would to someone else in the room. You can say "Put on something in the living room the kids will like" — the system understands the mood, the room, and the context. Note: Sonos 27voice launches in early access first in English in the United States. The existing Sonos Voice Control remains the default voice service at launch; Sonos 27voice will roll out alongside it, and the multi-language availability date will be confirmed soon.  

Sonos MCP

This is the most technically significant addition. MCP — for Model Context Protocol — is an open standard that lets external AI agents connect to third-party applications. In practice: from your usual AI assistant, you ask to play music in the kitchen. It happens. Without opening the Sonos app. Any agent compatible with the MCP protocol can connect to the system, once authorized by the user.

Sonos also previewed the Sonos Custom Agents. Eventually, users will be able to configure their own custom agents with their own language model and their own voice. Like Sonos 27voice, Sonos MCP is available first for English-speaking users in the United States, with a broader rollout to follow.

Two new ways to listen

Sonos 27 arrives alongside two new products designed to take full advantage of the platform's new capabilities.

Beam Ultra: a compact Dolby Atmos soundbar 

The Beam Ultra is the first mid-format Sonos soundbar to deliver 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos — a complete surround configuration in an enclosure sized for real-world rooms. A strong option for anyone who wants a true home cinema setup without giving up half the living room, and the ideal soundbar for making the most of portable surround speakers — a feature available from September 8. The soundbar itself will be available September 29, with pre-orders open now.

Sonos Ace Ultra: the Sonos headphones we were waiting for

The Sonos Ace Ultra is Sonos's flagship headphones, designed from day one for deep integration with the rest of the system. They're the first to benefit from Headphone Linking — the ability to shift sound from an entire room to the headphones with one press. Available September 29, with pre-orders open now.
