Few lineups in high fidelity are as consistent as the KEF LS series. From the LS3/5A, born in collaboration with the BBC in the 1970s, to the LS50 Wireless II that arrived in 2021, each iteration has asked the same fundamental question: how far can an active speaker go if given the right means? The LS Luxe is the most radical answer KEF has ever given, that of a compact wireless speaker that does not merely seek to improve what exists, but rethinks the entire concept from scratch.

The LS50 Wireless II has defined for several years what a compact active speaker can offer, and in many ways continues to do so today. The LS Luxe does not position itself as a replacement, but rather as an additional step that pushes the ceiling for the category. As such, it takes its own place within the lineup, alongside the LS60 Wireless and the LSX II.

KEF could have handed the LS Luxe to an industrial design agency, or reused existing concepts. The company instead chose to call on Ross Lovegrove, a Welsh designer whose work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Design Museum in London. This collaboration between Lovegrove and KEF is not new. He designed the Muon in 2007, a sonic sculpture in extruded aluminum that remains one of the most immediately recognizable speakers in the history of audio design.

The LS Luxe is different in nature. It is a product aimed at the broader market, not a hyper-limited collector's piece, but the formal rigor is the same. The cabinet is made of BMC (Bulk Molding Compound), a thermoplastic composite material used in aerospace for its rigidity and low mass. Its form is entirely rounded, with no right angles and no sharp edges, preventing the diffractions that color the sound at cabinet boundaries and degrade the stereo image.

The LS Luxe are available in three finishes: Eclipse Black, Mineral White and Dusk Titanium. Dedicated S-LUXE floor stands are also available separately, designed specifically for the proportions of the LS Luxe and its rounded base.

A 6.5-Inch 12th-Gen Uni-Q and Why It Matters

The KEF Uni-Q driver is one of the few genuine innovations of the decade in sound reproduction. The principle involves positioning the tweeter at the exact center of the woofer, so that both drivers share a common acoustic emission point. The advantage is perfectly coherent dispersion across the full spectrum, which allows the speaker to sound the same regardless of listening position.

In the LS50 Wireless II, the 12th-generation Uni-Q driver measures 130 mm (5.25 inches). For the LS Luxe, KEF developed an entirely new version of that same driver in 165 mm (6.5 inches), recalibrated from the ground up for this new cabinet. The size difference matters. The larger driver moves more air, extends naturally lower in the bass and reaches higher sound pressure levels before hitting its mechanical limits. The LS Luxe's lower cutoff frequency at ±3 dB is 42 Hz, a real, measurable and audible gain across virtually every musical genre.

MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology), developed jointly by KEF and the University of Exeter, is integrated behind the tweeter. It is worth establishing that the rear face of any tweeter emits acoustic energy toward the inside of the cabinet; if that energy is not absorbed, it superimposes itself on the direct signal in the form of coloration and phase distortion. This is where MAT comes in. It absorbs 99% of this parasitic energy, compared to barely 60 to 70% for a conventional absorptive enclosure. The tweeter operates in near-total acoustic silence on its rear face, which translates into a clarity and high-frequency resolution that is difficult to achieve by other means. The driver chassis is also mechanically decoupled from the cabinet to minimize vibration transfer.

Power Beyond Its Size

The LS Luxe delivers 380 W of amplification per speaker, with 280 W in Class D for the woofer and 100 W in Class A/B for the tweeter, for a total of 760 W across the pair. That is a considerable power reserve for a speaker of this size, and it is not there to pad a spec sheet. It allows a 165 mm driver to be driven with enough control and headroom to reach 110 dB of maximum sound pressure without audible compression.

But the amount of power is only part of the equation. What sets the LS Luxe further apart is how that power is applied to the driver. Current-drive amplification controls the voice coil through a current signal rather than a voltage signal. The reason this matters: most driver nonlinearities, and therefore a significant portion of harmonic distortion, are linked to impedance variations. Current drive is inherently insensitive to these variations, which results in a less colored, more direct reproduction.

VECO (Velocity Control Technology) adds an additional layer of control. An integrated sensor measures the actual velocity of the driver cone in real time and compares that measured movement against the target signal. Any deviation, whether caused by mechanical nonlinearities of the suspension, voice coil distortion or cabinet resonances, is corrected before it can be perceived. This is a feedback loop applied directly to the speaker's mechanics, not only to the electrical signal.

The MIE (Music Integrity Engine) completes this system with a set of DSP algorithms developed and calibrated specifically for the LS Luxe. Together, VECO and MIE allow the LS Luxe to achieve a frequency response of 42 Hz to 28 kHz (±3 dB), a remarkable performance for a speaker of this size.

Connectivity and Streaming

The LS Luxe uses the KEF W2 (Wireless 2) platform, which handles both the communication between the two speakers in the pair (the interspeaker connection) and network connectivity. By default, both speakers communicate wirelessly at 24-bit/96 kHz. Using the included RJ45 cable (a longer version is sold separately) switches the interspeaker link to 24-bit/192 kHz. The audio source, along with all physical inputs, always remains with the primary speaker.


On the physical inputs side, the LS Luxe has an HDMI eARC input, along with optical, coaxial and 3.5 mm auxiliary inputs. A subwoofer output is available on each speaker, a fairly unique design that offers significant installation flexibility. There is a natural pairing with subwoofers such as the KC62 or the KC92, though any model can be used.

Network streaming supports high-resolution formats up to 384 kHz/24-bit. AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Bluetooth 5.3, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music and Deezer are all natively integrated. Roon Ready compatibility is announced for 2027; if Roon is essential right now, the LS50 Wireless II already supports it natively.

The KEF Connect app handles initial setup and daily control. Normal mode simply asks for the distance to the rear wall and the room type to apply the appropriate acoustic compensation. Expert mode opens a full parametric equalizer for users who prefer manual calibration. A physical remote control is included in the box, and the primary speaker has a USB-C port reserved for charging a mobile device.

Do the LS Luxe need a subwoofer?

Necessary? No, but certainly possible. An extension of 42 Hz at ±3 dB is sufficient to reproduce the bulk of the low-frequency content in virtually any recorded repertoire. For music with pronounced sub-bass content, for home cinema use, for large rooms, or simply by personal preference, adding a subwoofer noticeably improves the physical sensation in the lower spectrum. With a subwoofer output on each speaker, installation flexibility is complete.

How do I connect the LS Luxe to a television?

The recommended connection is HDMI eARC, available on most recent televisions. It is the most direct path, transmitting a high-quality signal and allowing volume control from the television remote. If your television does not have HDMI eARC or ARC, the optical and coaxial inputs on the LS Luxe are available as alternatives. For a setup oriented more toward television than music, the KEF XIO soundbar ($2,800 CAD) is a more compact alternative, easier to integrate beneath a screen, on the same KEF W2 platform.

Are the LS Luxe compatible with Roon?
