5.25" Woofer and 1" Soft-Dome Tweeter with Waveguide

Each SP5 uses a 5.25-inch composite-fiber woofer (Continuum-style material) paired with a 1-inch soft-dome silk-composite tweeter. The tweeter has an enlarged rear chamber and a front waveguide intended to improve horizontal dispersion and control directivity for near-field listening. A ferrofluid cooling system acts on the tweeter's magnetic circuit. Frequency response is quoted at 65 Hz to 20 kHz, and a software bass extension can lower that limit to 50 Hz.

TPA3116D2 Biamplification and Dedicated Power Supply

Each speaker contains its own Texas Instruments TPA3116D2 Class D digital amplifier that biamps its own woofer (up to 60 W) and tweeter (up to 20 W). Both speakers (main and secondary) include their own dedicated 120 W switching power supply with a multi-stage rectification and filtering architecture meant to reduce interference. An automatic power-saving mode puts the speakers to sleep when no signal is present and wakes them on playback; it can be disabled in the app.

ES9068AS DACs, NJW1195A Volume, and Bluetooth 5.1

Two ESS ES9068AS DACs are used, one per channel (left and right), and volume is handled by an NJW1195A resistor-ladder electronic potentiometer (one per speaker) with a range of +31.5 dB to −95 dB in 0.5 dB steps. FiiO quotes a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB. Wireless input uses a Qualcomm QCC5125 chip in Bluetooth 5.1 and supports SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and LDAC codecs. The system is Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Wireless certified.

XLR, USB-C, AUX, and TF Card Inputs; App Control

The main speaker handles the source inputs: balanced XLR (compatible with TRS 6.35 mm), USB-C, 3.5 mm AUX, Bluetooth, and direct playback from a microSD card (up to 256 GB, in addition to 8 GB of internal memory). An infrared remote is included, and the FiiO Control app (Android, iOS) exposes input selection, Bluetooth codec, RGB lighting, power-saving behavior, and a 10-band parametric equalizer. Hardware controls provide treble adjustment (−2 dB / 0 dB / +2 dB), bass adjustment (0 dB / +3 dB / +6 dB), and bass-extension options (50 Hz or 60 Hz). The cabinet is die-cast aluminum from a 10 kg ingot per speaker.

Common Questions

Do the SP5 need an external amplifier?

No. Each SP5 has its own Texas Instruments TPA3116D2 Class D amplifier and its own 120 W switching power supply. You plug each speaker into a wall outlet, link the main speaker to the secondary with the supplied cable, and connect the source to the main speaker.

Can the frequency response be adjusted?

Yes. Hardware controls on the rear panel provide treble at −2 dB, 0 dB, or +2 dB; bass at 0 dB, +3 dB, or +6 dB; and two bass-extension options (50 Hz or 60 Hz). The FiiO Control app adds a 10-band parametric equalizer for finer adjustment.

Which Bluetooth codecs are supported?

The Qualcomm QCC5125 supports SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and LDAC (up to 990 kbps). The codec used also depends on the source device; the FiiO Control app shows the active codec.

How does the XLR input work?

The main speaker's XLR input accepts both XLR3 and TRS 6.35 mm plugs. When the main speaker is fed through XLR, the secondary speaker must also be connected via XLR: the RCA link cable between the two speakers is not used in that case.
