Key features

The flagship of KEF's R Series, the R11 Meta is the largest and most capable three-way floorstanding speaker in the range. The 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array — concentric tweeter and midrange, spatially aligned for uniform dispersion — sits above four 165 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers that reach down to 30 Hz with 113 dB maximum output. Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) placed behind the tweeter absorbs 99 % of rear-wave energy, freeing the highs from distortion that is usually inaudible but very real. Built for large rooms and capable power amplifiers (15–300 W), the R11 Meta plays at reference-chain scale without the disproportionate footprint.

The Flagship of the R Series

The KEF R11 Meta is the flagship 3-way floorstanding of the current R Series, sitting at the top of the range above the R7 Meta. It shares exactly the same Uni-Q drivers as the other Meta models and the same 165 mm bass driver as the R3 Meta and R7 Meta, ensuring absolute tonal coherence across the range. However, it takes those components to whole other tonal level with the use of four bass drivers instead of two, a significantly larger cabinet, and dynamic capacity for large listening rooms. All of its key acoustic technologies are derived from KEF's The Reference system.

Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT)

The signature of the R11 Meta is the integration of Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), awarded Innovation of the Year 2020 by What Hi-Fi?. It is a circular, maze-like complex structure placed directly behind the tweeter. Each channel absorbs a specific frequency; combined, they act as an acoustic black hole that absorbs 99% of the unwanted sound waves generated by the rear of the dome. Result: high frequencies of exceptional purity, without cavity distortion.

12th-Generation Uni-Q Array

The 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter is placed at the exact acoustic center of the 125 mm aluminium midrange cone, forming a point source. Sound is dispersed evenly throughout the room, eliminating the "sweet spot" effect: all listeners hear the same detailed sound regardless of position. The conical waveguide of this 12th generation was specifically redesigned to fit the MAT structure.

Four 165 mm Hybrid Aluminium Woofers and Dual Rear Flexible Ports

What truly sets the R11 Meta apart is its bass section composed of four 165 mm (6.5 in) woofers flanking the Uni-Q array (two above, two below). Each driver uses a two-part construction: a shallow concave aluminium skin over a paper cone, achieving an exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio. These four units in parallel double the radiating surface area compared to the R7 Meta and deliver typical in-room extension down to 26 Hz. The two rear Flexible Ports with walls profiled by computational fluid dynamics minimize turbulence even at high excursion.

Shadow Flare, Constrained Layer Damping and Plinth Base

Housing four powerful bass drivers demands an extremely inert cabinet. The R11 Meta uses the Constrained Layer Damping system: internal bracing connected to drivers by a viscoelastic material that converts vibrations into heat. Shadow Flare technology (precision transition surface around the Uni-Q array) reduces cabinet edge diffraction. A Plinth base with decoupling spikes and protective shoes is included for added dampening.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why choose the KEF R11 Meta?

The R11 Meta is the flagship floorstanding speaker of KEF's current R Series, designed for large listening rooms or high-end home theater spaces. It combines the 12th-generation Uni-Q array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) and four 165 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers, reaching typical in-room extension of 26 Hz with a maximum output of 113 dB. High 90 dB sensitivity. It is the choice for the listener who wants the resolution of the Uni-Q + MAT array with the dynamic authority and bass extension only four bass drivers can deliver.

How does it compare to the R7 Meta?

Both models share exactly the same 12th-generation Uni-Q array with MAT, meaning their vocal clarity and treble precision are identical. The difference lies entirely in the bass section and cabinet volume: the R11 Meta deploys four 165 mm bass drivers (26 Hz in-room extension, 113 dB output, 90 dB sensitivity) while the R7 Meta uses only two (27 Hz extension, 111 dB output, 88 dB sensitivity). The R11 is also 18.7 cm taller and 7.2 kg heavier.

What does MAT technology actually do?

The tweeter dome pushes music forward, but it also projects a rearward wave inside the cabinet. Traditionally, this energy bounces around the cavity and pollutes the primary signal. MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology) placed directly behind the tweeter is a highly complex maze-like structure that absorbs 99% of this unwanted energy. The result is an exceptionally pure and linear high-frequency response, without cavity distortion.

What amplifier is appropriate?

The R11 Meta presents a 4 Ω nominal load (minimum 3.2 Ω) and a high 90 dB sensitivity. KEF recommends a power range of 15 to 300 W per channel. The high sensitivity means an amplifier from 80 W is enough to reach comfortable volume, but the four 165 mm bass drivers in parallel at 4 Ω (dropping to 3.2 Ω) require a high-current amplifier capable of doubling its power into 4 Ω. The use of a dedicated power amplifier is to be considered for optimal performance.

Should it be placed far from the rear wall?

Yes, more so than the smaller models in the range. The R11 Meta features dual rear-firing Flexible Ports and four bass drivers capable of very high output. Placing it against a wall would artificially amplify the low frequencies. Leave at least 50 cm (20 in) of clearance from the rear wall; a distance of 80 cm to 1 m (32–40 in) is optimal to maximize the soundstage. KEF includes two foam port bungs in the box which, inserted into the ports, adjust the cabinet tuning for closer placement to a boundary while preserving well-controlled bass.
