Description

A McIntosh Streaming DAC Built for Real-World Use

The DS200 is McIntosh's dedicated network audio player and digital-to-analog converter — a standalone, full-chassis product with its own power supply, meant to sit in a serious hi-fi system. The design philosophy is clear: make high-resolution streaming accessible without requiring a proprietary control app or any technical setup. All the major streaming platforms are reached directly through their own apps on a phone, tablet, or computer, which become the DS200's remote. Two Wi-Fi antennas (2.4 and 5 GHz) and one Bluetooth antenna handle wireless connections; an Ethernet RJ45 port is available for a wired connection, which is the recommended path for high-bitrate audio.

An Audiophile Quad Balanced 8-Channel 32-Bit DAC

At the core of the DS200 sits a next-generation digital-to-analog converter in a Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit configuration. The Quad Balanced architecture uses four converters in parallel per channel to sum the correlated signals while cancelling uncorrelated noise, which translates in practice into a wide dynamic range and low measured distortion. Measured performance: total harmonic distortion 0.005%, signal-to-noise ratio 100 dB, dynamic range 100 dB, frequency response ±0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0.5/-3 dB from 5 Hz to 60 kHz, source-dependent). Output impedance is 100 Ω on both balanced and unbalanced outputs, which keeps the DS200 compatible with a wide range of downstream preamplifiers and integrated amplifiers.

Eight Digital Inputs Including HDMI ARC and AES/EBU

The DS200 carries eight wired digital inputs that cover the full range of digital sources in a hi-fi system: two coaxial (24-bit / 192 kHz), two optical Toslink (24-bit / 192 kHz), one USB Type-B (PCM 32-bit up to 384 kHz, DSD64 through DSD512, DXD 352.8 and 384 kHz), one professional AES/EBU input, one proprietary MCT input dedicated to McIntosh MCT-series SACD/CD transports (16-bit / 44.1 kHz CD stream and DSD64 SACD stream), and one HDMI ARC input for TV audio. The HDMI ARC input is especially useful: Dolby Digital and DTS multichannel are decoded to two-channel stereo so film and series soundtracks can be played back through the hi-fi system without a separate digital cable. The HDMI ARC input carries audio only — it does not pass video.

Universal Streaming: Roon Ready, AirPlay, Google Cast, Qobuz, Spotify and TIDAL

The DS200 holds both Roon Ready certification (a full Roon endpoint, Roon Labs's highest network-streaming certification) and Roon Tested certification (profiled by Roon Labs for automatic setup and effortless daily use). On the streaming service side, the DS200 supports Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect (including Spotify Lossless), and TIDAL Connect (including TIDAL Max): the listener controls playback from the service's native app, and the stream is sent directly to the DS200 without going through the phone. Open wireless protocols are also on board: Apple AirPlay for the Apple ecosystem and Google Cast for the Android ecosystem — two natural ways for a guest to stream their playlist from their own phone through the system.

Bluetooth 5.0 With aptX HD and aptX Low Latency

For Bluetooth listening, the DS200 uses Bluetooth 5.0 with the high-bitrate AAC codec, Qualcomm aptX HD for high-resolution playback, and Qualcomm aptX Low Latency to keep audio in sync with visual media (useful when watching video from a phone while listening through the system). Bluetooth is a practical drop-in input alongside the wired and Wi-Fi paths — a guest who wants to play a local track just pairs their phone with the DS200, no app installation required.

Fixed/Variable Outputs: A Built-In Digital Preamplifier

The DS200 carries one balanced XLR output pair and one unbalanced RCA output pair. Each can be configured in the menu as fixed (2.0 V RMS unbalanced / 4.0 V RMS balanced, with volume control handed to the downstream preamplifier or integrated amplifier) or variable (0 to 8.0 V RMS unbalanced / 0 to 16.0 V RMS balanced, with the DS200 handling volume itself). Variable mode lets the DS200 drive a power amplifier directly without a preamplifier in between — a clean solution for an all-digital system where the DS200 acts as source, DAC, and preamplifier at the same time. The volume attenuator is digitally controlled; the DS200 ships from the factory in fixed mode, and variable mode is a menu selection.

A Streaming DAC Hand-Assembled in Binghamton

McIntosh Laboratory shipped its first amplifier in 1949 from Binghamton, New York, and still builds every product by hand at the same site today. The DS200 carries the visual signatures of the brand: black glass front panel with an illuminated McIntosh logo, machined aluminum rotary knobs, custom-machined aluminum end caps, and a polished mirror stainless steel chassis. The footprint follows the standard McIntosh dimensions: 17.5 × 6 × 17 in. (44.5 × 15.2 × 43.2 cm), 20.5 lb (9.3 kg) — the DS200 stacks cleanly with a McIntosh preamplifier or integrated amplifier of the same width. A Data IN port, Power Control ports, and an RS-232 input let the DS200 integrate into a McIntosh stack or a custom-integrator setup. Every unit is tested point by point before leaving the factory and ships with a 3-year limited warranty backed by the authorized McIntosh service network.

Common Questions

Where does the DS200 sit in the McIntosh digital source lineup?

The DS200 is the full-chassis network audio player and DAC in the McIntosh catalog — the dedicated digital source for the listener who wants to isolate the digital section in its own enclosure. It complements the DA2 modules built into McIntosh preamplifiers (C55, C2800) and available as options (C8, C49, MA2375 tube integrated) without replacing them: the DS200 is the pick when the existing preamplifier does not have a network section, or when the priority is the best possible streamer independent of the preamplifier. The Music Streamers family also includes the MSA5500 streaming integrated (preamplifier + DAC + amp in one enclosure), the MB20 and MB25 Bluetooth transceivers, and the RS150/RS250 wireless loudspeakers for secondary rooms.

Can I connect the DS200 directly to a power amplifier?

Yes. The balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog outputs can each be configured in the menu as fixed (2.0 V RMS unbalanced / 4.0 V RMS balanced, with the downstream preamplifier controlling volume) or variable (0 to 8.0 V RMS unbalanced / 0 to 16.0 V RMS balanced, with the DS200 controlling volume itself). Variable mode lets the DS200 drive a power amplifier directly without a preamplifier in between — a clean solution for an all-digital system where the DS200 serves as source, DAC, and preamplifier at once. The unit ships in fixed mode; variable mode is a menu selection.

Which McIntosh amplifier or preamplifier is intended to pair with the DS200?

McIntosh places the C55 stereo preamplifier and the MC462 stereo power amplifier (2 × 450 W) first — a coherent hi-fi chain built around the DS200. Also, the MA9500 (solid-state stereo integrated, 300 W/channel), the MA352 (hybrid tube/solid-state integrated, 200 W/channel), and the MA2375 (75 W/channel tube stereo integrated) — each integrated amplifier lets the system be built as DS200 + integrated in just two boxes, without a separate preamplifier. On the speaker side, the brand suggests the ML1 Mk II or the XRT1.1K, but the DS200 works with any line-level hi-fi system.

Does the DS200's MCT input work with McIntosh SACD transports?

Yes. The proprietary MCT input establishes a dedicated digital link with a McIntosh MCT-series SACD/CD transport (MCT500 in the current catalog, MCT80 on the used market) to carry the DSD64 stream of a SACD or the 16-bit / 44.1 kHz PCM stream of a CD directly from the transport to the DS200's DAC, without an intermediate digital stage. This is the cleanest way to get the most out of a SACD in a modern chain: the SACD stays in native DSD end-to-end, and the DS200's Quad Balanced DAC handles the final conversion.
