The First McIntosh Hybrid Integrated, at a Bookshelf Scale

The MA252 is the first Hybrid Drive™ integrated amplifier McIntosh ever produced — the component that introduced this architecture in the integrated range and continues to hold a place in the catalog. It shares its industrial language with the other McIntosh open-chassis products: the MC275 stereo tube amplifier, the higher-powered MA352 Hybrid Drive integrated, and the C8 vacuum tube preamplifier. The lower chassis is polished mirror stainless steel, with custom die-cast aluminum side name badges, and the four tubes sit on top of the enclosure under a stylish protective cage. A high-contrast OLED display on the front panel shows the selected input and volume level — no blue Watt meters on this compact model.

Hybrid Drive™ Architecture: Four Tubes + Solid-State Power

The preamplifier section uses two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 vacuum tubes (four tubes in total, two per channel) that bring the harmonic breathing and texture typical of a tube chain. The direct-coupled solid-state power stage (DirectCouple) then takes over to deliver output power and bass control — 100 W per channel into 8 ohms and 160 W per channel into 4 ohms. The tubes sit at the top of the chassis inside the protective cage and glow green during normal operation; they briefly shift to amber if the Power Guard® protection engages on a channel, and return to green as soon as the peak has passed. Measured performance: total harmonic distortion 0.03%, dynamic headroom 1.8 dB, frequency response +0/-0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0/-3 dB from 10 Hz to 100 kHz), high-level signal-to-noise ratio 97 dB, damping factor greater than 200 into 8 ohms and greater than 100 into 4 ohms.

Power Guard®, Sentry Monitor™ and ThermalTrak Transistors

The MA252 is the first vacuum-tube-equipped McIntosh product to include Power Guard® technology. The circuit continuously monitors the output signal and adjusts the input level in microseconds to prevent audible clipping and speaker damage when the signal reaches the limit. Sentry Monitor™ complements the protection by disengaging the output stage (fuse-less) on a short-circuit condition and re-engaging automatically once normal conditions return. The ThermalTrak output transistors are mounted on the brand's signature Monogrammed Heatsinks™: they carry internal thermal diodes that eliminate the warm-up bias time typically needed to reach thermal stability — the MA252 sounds at its best from the moment it is turned on, with no warm-up lag.

Four Analog Inputs Including One MM Phono and a Subwoofer Output

The MA252 is deliberately an all-analog integrated, with no digital section. Four analog inputs cover the source connectivity: one balanced XLR pair, two unbalanced RCA pairs, and one dedicated phono input for a moving magnet (MM) cartridge with fixed loading to connect a turntable directly with a common MM cartridge — moving coil (MC) cartridges require an external MC-compatible phono preamplifier or a step-up transformer. Phono sensitivity is 3.0 mV with a signal-to-noise ratio of 80 dB; high-level sensitivity is 0.6 V balanced and 0.3 V unbalanced. Each input can be renamed on screen (Input Name Assign), and the Input Level Match function aligns perceived levels across sources without touching the main volume. A full-range mono unbalanced RCA subwoofer output allows a powered subwoofer to be added to extend low-frequency response; classic bass and treble tone controls are available from the front panel and the remote, with a full bypass of the tone circuit remembered per input.

High Drive Headphone Amp, OLED Display and McIntosh System Integration

The 1/4-inch front-panel headphone output is handled by a discrete McIntosh High Drive amplifier with enough voltage headroom to drive most common audiophile headphones — the MA252 extends the system to private listening without requiring an external headphone amp. The high-contrast OLED display on the front panel shows the selected input and volume level, along with the tone controls, balance, and Input Level Match. A 3.5 mm Power Control output synchronizes power on/off with other McIntosh components connected in the chain (preamplifiers, sources), and a rear Data port passes IR remote commands to connected source components — handy to drive the whole chain from the supplied HR085 remote.

An Amplifier Hand-Assembled in Binghamton and Award-Winning

McIntosh Laboratory shipped its first amplifier in 1949 from Binghamton, New York, and still builds every product by hand at the same site today. The MA252 carries the visual signatures of the brand in a compact format: a dual-layer polished mirror stainless steel chassis, custom die-cast aluminum side name badges, a stylish protective cage over the tubes, a front-panel OLED display, and the classic McIntosh logo. Every unit is tested point by point before leaving the factory and ships with a 3-year limited warranty backed by the authorized McIntosh service network. The MA252 has received numerous international audiophile press awards: Winner of the Diapason d'Or 2018 Hi-Fi Award (France), Top Audio Award by ON Magazine, High Quality Award by HIFI Live Magazine (Spain), 5 Stars by Stereo+ (Norway) and by Lyd & Bilde, and Most Wanted Components 2020 by The Stereo Times.

Common Questions

Where does the MA252 sit in the McIntosh integrated amplifier lineup?

The MA252 is the entry point of the McIntosh integrated amplifier family and the compact Hybrid Drive™ model. On the Hybrid Drive side (tube + solid-state), it precedes the MA352 (200 W into 8 ohms, 320 W into 4 ohms, same open chassis with a 5-band equalizer) and the MA12000 (350 W with Autoformer®, 17 inputs, DA2, 8-band equalizer — flagship). On the pure tube side, the MA2375 is McIntosh's first all-vacuum-tube integrated in over a decade. On the pure solid-state side, the range includes the MA5300 (compact 100 W with the DA1 DAC), the MA8950 (200 W with DA2), and the MA9500 (300 W with DA2 and 8-band EQ). The catalog also includes the MSA5500 (streaming integrated with Roon Ready) and the MAC7200 (integrated with an AM/FM tuner). The MA252 stands out by its compact open-chassis format, shared with the MC275 tube stereo amp, the C8 tube preamp, and the MA352 Hybrid Drive integrated.

Does the MA252 have a built-in DAC or digital inputs?

No — the MA252 is deliberately an all-analog integrated, with no digital section, no built-in DAC, and no digital inputs (coaxial, optical, USB, HDMI ARC). It carries four analog inputs: one balanced XLR pair, two unbalanced RCA pairs, and one MM phono input. To add streaming or TV audio, an external network audio player such as the McIntosh DS200 (Roon Ready with HDMI ARC built in, plus AirPlay/Cast/Qobuz/Spotify/TIDAL) or a CD/SACD player like the MCD85 can be connected to one of the MA252's analog inputs.

What type of phono cartridge does the MA252 accept?

The MA252's built-in phono input is specifically designed for moving magnet (MM) cartridges with fixed loading. Sensitivity is 3.0 mV and the signal-to-noise ratio is 80 dB. It hosts most common audiophile MM cartridges directly (Ortofon 2M, Audio-Technica VM95 series, Nagaoka MP, etc.). For a moving coil (MC) cartridge, an external MC-compatible phono preamplifier (the McIntosh MP100 is a coherent choice in the range, or a step-up transformer for a low-output MC) is required and connected to one of the MA252's RCA line inputs.

Can I connect a powered subwoofer to the MA252?

Yes. The MA252 has a dedicated full-range mono unbalanced RCA subwoofer output on the rear panel. The output is full-range (not filtered), so a subwoofer with its own adjustable low-pass filter is the natural pick — the crossover frequency and level are set on the subwoofer itself. A typical configuration: cross the subwoofer over at 60-80 Hz and level-match with the main speakers to extend low-end response without loading the MA252's power stage at the lowest frequencies.
