Description

The Most Compact McIntosh Full-Width Integrated Amplifier

The MA5300 is the entry point into McIntosh's full-width integrated amplifier lineup — the smallest and lightest of the solid-state family (17.5 × 6 × 18.75 in., 38 lb / 17.2 kg). It is built for the listener who wants the McIntosh acoustic signature, the signature blue Watt meters, and access to high-resolution digital sources, but whose room cannot host a larger chassis like the MA9500 or MA12000. The direct-coupled design (no Autoformer) helps keep the footprint compact while preserving the precision, spatial openness, and stability that define the brand. Fiber-optic-backlit black glass front panel, aluminum end caps, and new dual-scale blue Watt meters that read instantaneous power output for both 4- and 8-ohm impedances.

100 W Per Channel With 0.005% Rated THD

The MA5300 solid-state output stage delivers 100 W per channel into 8 ohms and 160 W per channel into 4 ohms — enough to drive the vast majority of standard-sensitivity home loudspeakers. Rated total harmonic distortion is 0.005%, dynamic headroom 1.8 dB, damping factor greater than 200 into 8 ohms and greater than 100 into 4 ohms. Frequency response is +0/-0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0/-3 dB from 10 Hz to 100 kHz), with a 95 dB signal-to-noise ratio on high-level inputs, 110 dB on the Power Amp input, and 82 dB on the MM phono input. The high-current output transistors are mounted on McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks™ that eliminate warm-up lag on the power stage.

Full Analog Section: XLR, RCA and MM Phono

The MA5300 carries six analog inputs: one balanced XLR, four unbalanced RCA, and one Moving Magnet (MM) phono input to connect a turntable with an MM cartridge directly, without an external phono preamp. Input impedance is 20 kohms on both balanced and unbalanced inputs. A variable RCA preamplifier output feeds an external power amplifier or an active subwoofer. Phono MM sensitivity is 2.5 mV, high-level sensitivity is 0.5 V (XLR) / 0.25 V (RCA), and Power Amp input sensitivity is 1 V. Every input can be renamed with a custom label (Input Assign), and Input Level Match aligns perceived level across sources.

DA1 Digital Audio Module With DA2 Upgrade Path

The MA5300 ships with the DA1 Digital Audio Module, adding six digital inputs: two coaxial, two optical, one USB, and one proprietary MCT input for pairing with a McIntosh SACD/CD transport (like the MCT500) to read SACD layers in DSD. The DA1 is built around an 8-channel, 32-bit digital-to-analog converter used in Quad Balanced mode and natively supports PCM up to 32-bit / 384 kHz and DSD up to DSD256 over USB (DXD 352.8 and 384 kHz as well). The coaxial and optical inputs accept 24-bit / 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz. The DA1 is dealer-replaceable with a DA2 module to add native DSD512 support and an HDMI (ARC) input — the MA5300 is the only McIntosh integrated to offer this hardware upgrade path.

High Drive Headphone Amp With HXD® and Home Theater PassThru

The MA5300 includes a dedicated High Drive headphone amplifier with McIntosh's patented Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD®) circuit, accessed via the 1/4-inch front-panel jack. HXD® reintroduces cross-channel spatial cues between the two headphone channels to recreate an image closer to speaker listening, with more perceived depth and less of the in-the-head sensation typical of headphones. Home Theater PassThru integrates the MA5300 into a multichannel home theater system: the front-channel signals from the AV processor pass directly through the MA5300 power stage at unity gain, letting you share the main speakers between pure stereo listening and multichannel home theater with no cable repatching.

Power Guard® and Sentry Monitor™ Protection, Bass and Treble Tone Controls

The MA5300 carries the two proprietary McIntosh protection circuits. Power Guard® monitors the input signal continuously and dynamically adjusts gain within microseconds to prevent hard clipping of the output stage — critical for tweeter protection and for preserving signal quality at high listening levels. Sentry Monitor™ is a fuse-less short-circuit protection circuit that disengages the output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels, then automatically resets once conditions return to normal. Bass and Treble tone controls are accessible on the front panel and remote for tuning frequency balance to the room or the recording, with a Tone Bypass function that removes the tone stage entirely from the signal path.

Hand-Assembled in Binghamton and Award-Winning

Every MA5300 is hand-assembled at the McIntosh factory in Binghamton, New York. The dual-layer chassis is black-painted steel, topped with the signature black glass front panel with fiber-optic backlighting and illuminated logo, dual-scale blue Watt meters, rotary control knobs, and aluminum end caps. Gold-plated Standard-type speaker binding posts, two rear-panel Data Ports for controlling connected McIntosh sources, an RS-232 port for custom integration, one Power Control output, and rear-panel IR sensor inputs. Roon Tested, awarded 5 out of 5 stars by Stereo+ and named a Most Wanted Component 2020 by The Stereo Times. Dimensions 17.5 × 6 × 18.75 in. (44.45 × 15.2 × 47.6 cm), net weight 38 lb (17.2 kg), standby power consumption less than 0.25 W. 3-year limited warranty.

Common Questions

How does the MA5300's Direct Coupled design compare to McIntosh Autoformers™?

The higher-tier McIntosh integrated amplifiers (MA7200, MA8950, MA9500, MA12000, MAC7200) use output Autoformer™ transformers that deliver the full rated power equally into 2, 4, or 8 ohms — the amplifier always sees an ideal load. The MA5300 uses a Direct Coupled design instead: rated power varies with the load (100 W into 8 ohms, 160 W into 4 ohms), and the amplifier saves the weight and volume of the output transformer. This design keeps the chassis at 17.2 kg (38 lb) while preserving the McIntosh acoustic signature, and it drives the vast majority of conventional loudspeakers with ease.

Can the MA5300 handle high-resolution digital sources?

Yes. The DA1 module included by default accepts PCM up to 32-bit / 384 kHz and DSD up to DSD256 over USB (DXD 352.8 and 384 kHz as well). Coaxial and optical inputs accept 24-bit / 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz, and the proprietary MCT input pairs with a McIntosh SACD/CD transport (like the MCT500) to read SACD layers in DSD. The DA1 is dealer-replaceable with a DA2 module to add native DSD512 support and an HDMI (ARC) input — the MA5300 is the only McIntosh integrated to offer this hardware upgrade path.

Can I use the MA5300 in a home theater setup?

Yes, through the built-in Home Theater PassThru feature. Once assigned to an input, the surround processor's front-left and front-right channel signals pass directly through the MA5300's power stage at unity gain, which lets you share the main speakers between pure stereo listening and multichannel home theater without repatching speaker cables.

Which loudspeakers and source components pair well with the MA5300?

As an integrated amplifier, the MA5300 needs no external preamplifier or power amp. McIntosh's suggested partners for the MA5300 include the XR50 bookshelf loudspeaker, the MCD350 SACD/CD player, the MCT500 SACD/CD transport (via the proprietary MCT input), the MT2 turntable, the MR89 AM/FM tuner, the MQ112 environmental equalizer for room correction, and the MPC500 power controller.
