McIntosh MC1.25KW - Black

SKU: MC-1.25KW | UPC: 842548106666

Key features

The McIntosh MC1.25KW is the most powerful single-chassis monoblock power amplifier in the McIntosh lineup — 1,200 W per channel through McIntosh Autoformer™ output transformers, delivered equally into 2, 4, or 8 ohm loads. It succeeds the MC1.2KW by carrying forward the Quad Balanced McIntosh topology and the proprietary protection circuits, but redesigned from top to bottom: power-supply filter capacitance up 50%, revised power transformer, heavier-gauge internal wiring, upgraded circuit components, and a new power management system that puts the amplifier to sleep after a set idle period.

The Most Powerful Single-Chassis Monoblock McIntosh Builds

The MC1.25KW is the most powerful single-chassis monoblock power amplifier in the McIntosh catalog — 1,200 W per channel into 2, 4, or 8 ohms, through McIntosh Autoformer™ output transformers. It succeeds the MC1.2KW by carrying forward the proven Quad Balanced architecture and being redesigned from top to bottom for improved performance, reliability, and industrial design. A pair of MC1.25KWs in monoblock configuration anchors a stereo system capable of rivaling nearly any system in the world, driving even the most demanding loudspeakers. Massive 158 lb (71.7 kg) of build weight — the four new redesigned chamfered-edge feet keep the amplifier stable on its shelf under a mass that heavy.

1,200 W Into 2, 4, or 8 Ohms Through Autoformer™

The MC1.25KW output stage delivers 1,200 W into 2, 4, or 8 ohms via McIntosh Autoformer™ output transformers — full rated power across all common speaker impedances, no compromise. The amplifier always sees an ideal load, letting it drive the most difficult loudspeakers (low impedance, low sensitivity, unruly phase response) with the same authority as conventional loads. Total harmonic distortion is rated at 0.005%, frequency response is +0/-0.25 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0/-3 dB from 10 Hz to 100 kHz), damping factor is greater than 40 across the audio band (Wideband). The high-current output transistors are mounted on McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks™ that eliminate warm-up lag on the output stage.

Quad Balanced Topology and 124 dB Signal-to-Noise

The McIntosh Quad Balanced design uses two full push-pull amplifier stages operating in opposite phase to cancel virtually all noise and distortion that could creep into the audio signal. The result is a 124 dB signal-to-noise ratio below rated output on the balanced XLR input (120 dB on the unbalanced RCA input) — an exceptionally quiet noise floor where every musical detail comes through clearly. The topology requires a full doubling of every critical component in the amplification stage (transistors, capacitors, resistors) but delivers noise immunity a conventional single-ended design cannot match.

Power Guard® and Sentry Monitor™ Protection

The MC1.25KW carries the two proprietary McIntosh protection circuits. Power Guard® monitors both input and output signals at the speed of light and dynamically adjusts gain within microseconds to prevent hard clipping of the output stage — critical for tweeter protection and for preserving signal quality at high listening levels. Sentry Monitor™ is a fuse-less short-circuit protection circuit that disengages the output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels, then automatically resets once conditions return to normal. Patented gold-plated Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts — the exclusive McIntosh design that clamps the speaker cable (spade lug, banana plug, or bare wire) securely to prevent accidental shorts, with gold plating to prevent corrosion.

Balanced and Unbalanced Connectivity With Loop Outputs

The MC1.25KW carries one balanced XLR input and one unbalanced RCA input, plus one balanced XLR output and one unbalanced RCA output. The loop outputs make bi-amping and tri-amping of multi-way speakers straightforward, or send the signal to a secondary system (for instance from a preamp with limited outputs) or feed an active subwoofer. Input impedance is 20 kohms. A Remote Power Control port allows synchronized startup with connected McIntosh sources (preamplifiers, SACD/CD players, turntables, tuners, streamers) — a single Power Control cable from the preamp turns the MC1.25KW on and off automatically with the rest of the system.

Iconic McIntosh Design and 11-Inch Blue Watt Meter

The MC1.25KW carries the McIntosh visual signature: black glass front panel with direct-LED backlighting (new on the MC1.25KW for better color fidelity), illuminated logo, aluminum control knobs, and aluminum end caps with lift handles. The large fast-responding 11-inch (27.9 cm) blue Watt Output meter on the front panel reads real-time power output referenced to the 8-ohm Autoformer tap — a useful cue for reading the load on the output stage and the available headroom. Panel and meter brightness can be dimmed or turned off via the Meter Light Switch. New on the MC1.25KW: the power transformer and Autoformer are now housed in new glass-topped enclosures on the top plate, and a decorative circular glasswork ring frames the amplifier's name badge in between.

Common Questions

What's the difference between the MC1.25KW and the MC1.2KW it replaces?

The MC1.25KW succeeds the MC1.2KW by carrying forward its Quad Balanced topology and Autoformer™ architecture but redesigning them from top to bottom. Performance: 50% higher filter capacitance for wider dynamic headroom and firmer bass, updated power transformer, heavier-gauge internal wiring, upgraded circuit components, and a new power management system that puts the amplifier into standby after an idle period. Ergonomics: repositioned AC receptacle for wider cord clearance, four new chamfered-edge feet. Industrial design: direct-LED backlighting of the front panel and meter for better color fidelity, glass-topped enclosures for the transformers on the top plate. The 11-inch blue Watt meter, Power Guard® / Sentry Monitor™ protection, and iconic McIntosh look are preserved.

Which speaker binding post tap should I use (2, 4, or 8 ohms)?

Connect the speaker cables to the Solid Cinch™ binding post that matches the speaker's nominal impedance as rated by the manufacturer (2, 4, or 8 ohms). Thanks to the McIntosh Autoformer™ output transformers, the MC1.25KW delivers its full 1,200 W on any of these three taps — the amplifier always sees an ideal load and drives even very difficult low-impedance loudspeakers with the same authority as conventional loads.

Can I use the balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs at the same time?

No. The MC1.25KW has a front-panel input selector switch that chooses between the balanced XLR input and the unbalanced RCA input as the active source. The balanced and unbalanced outputs, however, are always available and can be used simultaneously for bi-amping or tri-amping of multi-way loudspeakers, for connecting an active subwoofer, or to send signal to a secondary system from a preamplifier with limited outputs.

Which loudspeakers and preamplifier are recommended with the MC1.25KW?

McIntosh's suggested partners for the MC1.25KW include the C12000 two-chassis preamplifier, the MT10 turntable, the MCD12000 SACD/CD player, the MR89 AM/FM tuner, the XRT1.1K floor-standing loudspeaker, the XCS1.5K center-channel loudspeaker, and the PS1K powered subwoofer. The MC1.25KW in monoblock configuration is ideally paired with a second MC1.25KW for a stereo setup (one per channel), which fully leverages its ability to drive reference loudspeakers with low sensitivity or complex load characteristics.
