Key features

The McIntosh MC1502 is a 2-channel vacuum tube stereo power amplifier delivering 150 W per channel into 2, 4, or 8 ohms through McIntosh's patented Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers — the same technology McIntosh was founded on in 1949. It succeeds the MC2152 (Limited Edition 70th Anniversary) by keeping the full audio specifications and sonic performance intact but wrapping them in a more customary McIntosh design. The amplification stage carries eight KT88 output tubes (four per channel) and eight small-signal tubes (four 12AX7A for the balanced and input stages, four 12AT7 for the voltage and driver stages, two of each per channel). Total harmonic distortion is 0.5% maximum from 250 mW to rated power (20 Hz to 20 kHz), and less than 0.20% at 1 W. Sentry Monitor™ protection (signal tubes flash red when engaged), patented gold-plated Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts with dedicated 2, 4, and 8 ohm taps, balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, and 3.5 mm Power Control input and output.

The MC275's Big Brother and Successor to the MC2152

The McIntosh MC1502 directly succeeds the MC2152 (McIntosh's Limited Edition 70th Anniversary amplifier from 2019) by keeping the full audio specifications and sonic performance intact but wrapping them in a more customary McIntosh design. It shares the timeless styling of the classic MC275 — the McIntosh reference tube amplifier — and is presented as its big brother: twice the stereo power (150 W vs 75 W per channel), a physically larger chassis, and — crucially — a better signal-to-noise ratio (112 dB vs 105 dB from a pair of MC275s in monoblock configuration to reach 150 W). Built for the listener who wants the McIntosh tube sound with the power reserves modern loudspeakers demand.

150 W Into 2, 4, or 8 Ohms Through Unity Coupled Circuit Transformers

The MC1502 output stage delivers 150 W per channel into 2, 4, or 8 ohms through McIntosh's patented Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers — the same technology McIntosh was founded on in 1949. The dual-primary transformer topology eliminates the impedance mismatch typical of tube amplifiers and lets the amplifier deliver full rated power across all common speaker impedances without compromise. Two Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers flank the power transformer positioned between them; each is housed in a glass-topped extruded enclosure that visually exposes the transformer's wiring diagram — a distinctive visual feature unique to the MC1502 (and to the MC2152 it inherits from). Rated power band 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

Measured Performance: 112 dB Signal-to-Noise

The MC1502 delivers a 112 dB signal-to-noise ratio below rated output — remarkable for a high-power tube amplifier, and better than a pair of MC275s used in mono to reach the same 150 W (105 dB). Total harmonic distortion is 0.5% maximum from 250 mW to rated power across the audio band (20 Hz to 20 kHz), and less than 0.20% at 1 W. Damping factor is greater than 18 — a typical, well-tuned value for a tube amplifier, where the transformer-coupled topology and output impedance contribute to the warm sonic signature while preserving bass control. Input sensitivity and impedance are set for optimal coupling with McIntosh tube or solid-state preamplifiers.

Sixteen Tubes: Eight KT88 Outputs and Eight Small-Signal Tubes

The MC1502 carries eight KT88 output tubes (four per channel) and eight small-signal tubes — four 12AX7A dedicated to the balanced and input stages and four 12AT7 dedicated to the voltage and driver stages, two of each per channel. The KT88 tube sockets include Air-Pipe cooling at their bases to help extend tube service life. The small-signal tube sockets use ceramic base construction with gold-plated contacts for protection against atmospheric contamination. The eight small-signal tubes glow a natural green light. All sixteen tubes are protected by a 12-gauge stainless steel wire cage with a black powder-coat finish, which shields the tubes while preserving open convective ventilation.

Mirror-Polished Steel Chassis, Cast Aluminum Badges and Glass-Topped Transformers

The MC1502 carries the traditional McIntosh look: a precision-formed stainless steel chassis polished to a mirror finish, on which the sixteen tubes and three transformers sit. Two fully spelled-out vintage die-cast aluminum name badges adorn two sides of the chassis, and an abbreviated badge is centered between the Tube Lights and Power knobs on the front panel. The two Unity Coupled Circuit transformers and the power transformer are housed in glass-topped extruded enclosures that expose their wiring diagrams — a visual nod to the McIntosh founding technology of 1949. The 12-gauge black powder-coated tube protection cage maintains a coherent aesthetic when installed. Dimensions 18-1/4 × 10-1/4 × 21 in. (46.4 × 26 × 53.3 cm), net weight 118 lb (53.5 kg) — a substantial chassis that demands a heavy-duty shelf.

Sentry Monitor™, Solid Cinch™ and Complete Connectivity

The Sentry Monitor™ McIntosh protection circuit monitors output current continuously and shuts the amplifier down automatically if safe operating limits are exceeded — no destructible fuses required; the small-signal tubes flash red when protection engages, providing immediate visual feedback. Patented gold-plated Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts with independent, labeled taps for 2, 4, and 8 ohm loads — the exclusive McIntosh design that clamps the speaker cable (spade lug, banana plug, or bare wire) securely to prevent accidental shorts. One balanced XLR and one unbalanced RCA input per channel (two balanced + two unbalanced inputs total) accept any high-end preamplifier. A 3.5 mm Power Control input and output pair syncs the amplifier's power state with connected McIntosh sources (preamplifier, SACD/CD player, turntable, streamer).

Hand-Assembled in Binghamton, Design Rooted in 1949

Every MC1502 is hand-assembled at the McIntosh factory in Binghamton, New York, in an unbroken tradition since 1949 — the very year the Unity Coupled Circuit transformer principle that still defines the MC1502 was first introduced. The MC1502 distinguishes itself from the MC2152 (Limited Edition 70th Anniversary) with a more classic McIntosh look — fully spelled-out cast aluminum name badges on both sides — but carries the same audio specifications. The transformer winding and hand-wiring techniques are proven over decades. Every unit is backed by the McIntosh authorized service network and comes with a 3-year limited warranty. The MC1502 is built to stay in its owner's rack for decades to come.

Common Questions

What's the difference between the MC1502 and the MC275?

McIntosh presents the MC1502 as the MC275's big brother. It delivers twice the stereo power (150 W per channel vs 75 W) through eight KT88 tubes (vs four on the MC275) and a physically larger chassis. Signal-to-noise is also better: 112 dB on the MC1502 vs 105 dB from a pair of MC275s used in mono to reach 150 W. Both share the same fundamental topology (Unity Coupled Circuit, KT88 tubes, Sentry Monitor™ protection, Solid Cinch™ posts) and the same timeless design language.

Which speaker binding post tap should I use (2, 4, or 8 ohms)?

Connect the speakers to the Solid Cinch™ binding post that matches the speaker's nominal impedance as rated by the manufacturer (2, 4, or 8 ohms). Thanks to the McIntosh Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers, the MC1502 delivers its full 150 W on any of these three taps.

Which McIntosh preamplifiers are recommended with the MC1502?

The MC1502 pairs naturally with the McIntosh tube preamplifiers — the C22 Mk V (co-reviewed with the MC1502 by Haute Fidélité) or the C2800. It also works well with solid-state preamplifiers like the C55 for a more analytical presentation. The 3.5 mm Power Control ports synchronize the amplifier's power state with the preamplifier and other McIntosh sources.

What are the installation and ventilation requirements for the MC1502?

At 118 lb (53.5 kg) with sixteen tubes generating significant heat in operation, the MC1502 requires a heavy-duty audio rack with generous ventilation and open space above the protection cage for natural convective airflow. Avoid closed cabinets with no circulation. Dimensions 18-1/4 × 10-1/4 × 21 in. (46.4 × 26 × 53.3 cm).
