The McIntosh MDA200 is a standalone Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) with a simple mission: to add McIntosh digital decoding to a hi-fi chain that doesn't have one, or to replace an outdated older DAC that no longer supports today's high-resolution formats. It is a compact, self-contained component that connects to the inputs of an existing preamplifier or integrated amplifier through its balanced XLR or unbalanced RCA analog outputs. That lets you keep the analog amplification you already like (vintage preamplifier, tube integrated, etc.) while adding the modern digital inputs you need for a streamer, a computer, a TV, an SACD transport, or a set-top box.

DA2 Module: Quad Balanced 8-Channel 32-Bit DAC

At the heart of the MDA200 sits the proprietary McIntosh DA2 Digital Audio Module, powered by a next-generation Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter. This differential architecture with 4 conversion channels per audio channel delivers a 100 dB dynamic range and lowers total harmonic distortion to 0.005%. Frequency response +0/-0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0/-3 dB from 5 Hz to 60 kHz, source dependent), 100 dB signal-to-noise. That HDMI ARC input is audio only — it does not pass video, cannot be used with a source other than a compatible TV, and will not play audio from any non-TV source. Mode 2 — variable level (user-enabled): 0 to 16 V RMS on XLR / 0 to 8 V RMS on RCA, with volume adjusted by the front-panel ADJUST knob and the remote. In variable mode, the MDA200 acts as a digital preamplifier that drives a McIntosh stereo power amplifier directly (MC312, MC462, MC451 monoblock, or MC611 monoblock) — no analog preamplifier required in the chain.
