Description

Closed-Loop Digital Class D Amplification: 50 W / 90 W Per Channel

Each channel of the MI1250 uses a closed loop digital switching amplifier module paired with a robust power supply — a modern, highly efficient Class D design that delivers 50 W per channel into 8 ohms and 90 W per channel into 4 ohms. The high efficiency of Class D means the MI1250 does not require cooling fans: fully silent operation, which particularly matters in a domestic multi-zone environment where the amplifier is often installed in an equipment rack near living areas. 0.05% THD, 95 dB S/N below rated output, dynamic headroom 2.1 dB (8 Ω) / 3.3 dB (4 Ω), damping factor >65 (8 Ω) and >32 (4 Ω), frequency response +0/-0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Direct Coupled output.

Rear Panel: Per-Channel RCA + Bussable Digital Inputs

The MI1250's rear panel offers one unbalanced RCA input and one 2-pole Phoenix push-in speaker terminal per channel. The removable Phoenix terminals are particularly convenient for professional installation: the integrator prepares and screws the speaker cables into the terminals ahead of time, then simply clips each terminal onto the matching channel on the rear panel. In addition to the 12 individual RCA inputs, the MI1250 accepts two bussable digital audio inputs — either coax or optical — that can feed multiple channels simultaneously. Each channel also has an individual rear-panel volume control to balance level between speakers of different sensitivity or between listening zones.

BUS Input/Output and Channel Summing for Distribution

The MI1250 provides several mechanisms for distributing a source signal to multiple channels or multiple amplifiers. BUS inputs and outputs: easily distribute a single stereo signal across multiple channels of the same MI1250, or across multiple chained McIntosh amplifiers (a MI1250 + a MI128 for 20 channels, for example). Channel summing circuits: convert a stereo signal into a mono signal for distribution to mono speakers (typical for background zones where the available source is mono). The bussable digital inputs let you distribute a digital source (network streamer, CD transport) to multiple MI1250 channels without going through intermediate analog conversion.

Power Guard®, Sentry Monitor™, and Auto On/Off Protection

The MI1250 carries the McIntosh proprietary protection technologies. Power Guard® continuously monitors the input signal and adjusts gain in real time to prevent clipping — critical protection for the tweeters of in-wall, in-ceiling, and outdoor speakers, which are particularly sensitive to clipping. Sentry Monitor™ is a fuseless short-circuit protection circuit: it disengages the output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels, then automatically resets as soon as conditions return to normal — no fuse in the signal path, no manual intervention required. Eco-friendly signal-sensing auto on/off: the MI1250 turns off automatically after a period without an input signal, and turns back on automatically when a signal appears on the input.

12V Trigger for Integration With a Preamp or Processor

The MI1250 has 12V Trigger input and output ports that synchronize its power state with a preamplifier, an AV processor, or a third-party home automation controller. In practice, the user turns on the preamplifier or processor and the MI1250 turns on automatically — then turns off just as automatically when the preamplifier or processor goes into standby. The 12V Trigger can also be chained to other McIntosh or third-party amplifiers for centralized power management of a full equipment rack.

Where the MI1250 Sits in the McIntosh Custom Install Range

In the McIntosh Custom Install range, the MI1250 holds the maximum channel-density position. Its siblings in the same series: MI128 (8 channels, 120 W/8 Ω, 2U rackmount, bussable inputs), MI347 (7 channels dedicated to home theater with 3 front channels at 250 W and 4 surround channels at 125 W, 3U rackmount), MI254 (4 channels, 250 W/8 Ω, 2U rackmount, bussable inputs), MI502 (2 channels, 500 W/8 Ω, 2U rackmount — the most powerful per channel in the Custom Install series). For distributed preamplification, the CR106 (2-channel 6-zone preamplifier / audio matrix, expandable to 30 zones via Dante®) is the natural partner to the MI1250 to build a full multi-zone system. The MHT300 home theater receiver is also available for installations with a dedicated cinema room in the residence.

Common Questions

How many stereo zones can the MI1250 drive?

A single MI1250 can drive up to six discrete stereo zones (2 channels per stereo zone). A typical residential deployment: kitchen, dining room, living room, primary bedroom, bathroom, patio — each with its pair of stereo in-wall, in-ceiling, wall-mount, or outdoor speakers. Each zone can also be configured as mono (one speaker per channel, 12 mono zones total) or in a mixed stereo + mono combination. The BUS in/out and the bussable digital inputs let you distribute the same source (a network streamer, a radio, a Bluetooth source) to multiple zones simultaneously.

How do the MI1250's bussable inputs work?

The MI1250 has 12 individual RCA inputs (one per channel) AND two bussable digital audio inputs (coax or optical, your choice) that can feed multiple channels at once. The principle: rather than sending a source to a single channel, the bussable inputs distribute the signal to a group of channels — for example, distributing a streamer's digital output to the 6 channels of a living room + kitchen + dining room zone, with no external preamplifier or router in between. The MI1250 also has dedicated BUS input and output ports that distribute a stereo signal to multiple chained amplifiers — a MI1250 (12 channels) + a MI128 (8 channels) for a 20-channel system sharing a common source, for example.

What type of speaker terminals does the MI1250 use?

The MI1250 uses 2-pole Phoenix push-in speaker terminals, removable, one terminal per channel. This format is a standard in professional integration installations because it lets the integrator prepare and screw the speaker cables into the terminals before attaching them to the amplifier — a significant time saver when there are twelve channels to wire in an equipment rack. The Phoenix terminals then clip firmly onto the rear panel and stay well seated. No risk of long-term loosening.

Which McIntosh partners are recommended with the MI1250?

McIntosh explicitly recommends several partners to build a complete integration system around the MI1250. For distributed preamplification: the CR106 is the natural partner for a serious multi-zone system. Source partners: the MCD350 SACD/CD player and the MT2 turntable. For protection: the MIP200 power controller. For speakers: the WS500 in-wall speaker and the CS200 in-ceiling speaker. McIntosh Power Control Cables for power synchronization. Within the same Custom Install series, the MI1250 also naturally combines with the other amplifiers: MI502 (2 channels, 500 W), MI254 (4 channels, 250 W), MI347 (7 channels for home theater) and MI128 (8 channels, 120 W) to cover every combination of zones and power.
