Description

The Highest Per-Channel Power Amp in the McIntosh Custom Install Range

The McIntosh MI502 is the only 2-channel amplifier in the McIntosh Custom Install lineup — and it's also the Custom Install amp with the highest per-channel power. It delivers 500 W per channel into 8 ohms and 800 W per channel into 4 ohms — that's twice the power per channel of the MI254 (250 W/8 Ω × 4 channels) and more than four times the power of the MI128 (120 W/8 Ω × 8 channels). The MI502 is designed for configurations where per-channel power matters more than channel count: front left/right channels of a high-end home theater, two passive in-wall subwoofers, a dedicated hi-fi stereo system, or a pair of demanding outdoor speakers. Deliberately understated amplifier — akin to a McIntosh hi-fi component, but in a 2U rackmount form factor for the equipment rack.

Closed-Loop Digital Class D Amplification: 500 W / 800 W Per Channel

Each channel of the MI502 uses a closed loop digital switching amplifier module paired with a robust power supply — a modern, highly efficient Class D design that delivers 500 W per channel into 8 ohms and 800 W per channel into 4 ohms, with performance levels rarely achieved in custom install audio. The high efficiency of Class D means the MI502 does not require noisy cooling fans to maintain its nominal operating temperature — fully silent operation, which particularly matters in a domestic environment. 0.05% THD, 98 dB S/N below rated output, dynamic headroom 2.7 dB (8 Ω) / 3.7 dB (4 Ω), damping factor >85 (8 Ω) and >45 (4 Ω), frequency response +0/-0.9 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Direct Coupled output.

McIntosh Blue Watt Meters and Hi-Fi Aesthetics

The MI502's black glass front panel carries two McIntosh Blue Watt Meters — the brand's iconic blue power meters — that display the output power of each channel in real time. Multi-color LED indicators per channel display the status of each channel (signal presence, Power Guard® activation). Illuminated McIntosh logo (Direct LED backlighting), silver trim, removable rack-mount ears for non-rack installation. The MI502 shares these hi-fi aesthetics with the MI254 (the only other Custom Install amplifier with Blue Watt Meters).

Rear Panel: XLR, RCA, 5-Way Binding Posts, 12V Power Control

The MI502's rear panel offers a pair of balanced XLR inputs and a pair of unbalanced RCA inputs to connect to a preamplifier or home theater processor. Speaker output through standard McIntosh 5-way speaker binding posts — the classic hi-fi format that accepts bare wire, banana plugs, and spade lugs. 12V Power Control port to synchronize power-on and power-off with a preamplifier, an AV processor, or a home automation system. Eco-friendly signal sensing: the MI502 turns on automatically when a signal appears on the input and turns off automatically after a period without a detected signal.

Power Guard® and Sentry Monitor™ Protection

The MI502 carries the McIntosh proprietary protection technologies. Power Guard® continuously monitors the input signal and adjusts gain in real time to prevent amplifier clipping — critical protection for hi-fi speaker tweeters that can be damaged by sustained clipping. Sentry Monitor™ is a fuseless short-circuit protection circuit: it disengages the output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels, then automatically resets as soon as conditions return to normal — no fuse in the signal path, no manual intervention required.

Where the MI502 Sits in the McIntosh Custom Install Range

In the McIntosh Custom Install range, the MI502 holds the maximum per-channel power position. Its siblings in the same series: MI254 (4 channels, 250 W/8 Ω, 2U rackmount — the only other Custom Install amp with hi-fi Blue Watt Meters), MI347 (7 channels dedicated to home theater, 3U rackmount), MI128 (8 channels, 120 W/8 Ω, 2U rackmount), MI1250 (12 channels, 50 W/8 Ω, 2U rackmount — maximum density). The MI502 is also the only Custom Install amp classified as "Ideal for Distributed Audio Systems, 2-Channel Audio Systems & Home Theater Systems" — that is, suited to every McIntosh use case, with enough power for any type of domestic hi-fi speaker.

Common Questions

What can a 2-channel amp do in a home theater system?

Several use cases. (1) Drive the front left and right channels of a home theater — the pair that carries most of the music and action effects; adding the MI502's power meaningfully reinforces the cinema experience. (2) Drive two passive subwoofers (in-wall or in-cabinet) — the MI502's 500 W per channel is plenty for a pair of quality passive subs. (3) Chaining two MI502s drives the three front channels + one subwoofer of a 5.1 or 7.1 system. (4) Drive outdoor speakers for the patio — 500 W per channel helps overcome outdoor ambient noise.

How do the MI502's Blue Watt Meters work?

The two McIntosh Blue Watt Meters on the front display the actual output power in watts of each channel — the left meter for the left channel, the right meter for the right channel. They follow the music in real time and move with the signal being reproduced, giving an immediate visual readout of the power the amplifier is delivering at every moment. The blue Watt meters are an iconic visual element of the McIntosh brand going back decades, and in the Custom Install range they appear only on the MI502 and the MI254 (the MI128, MI347, and MI1250 use LED indicators instead).

How is the MI502 different from a McIntosh stereo amplifier like the MC152?

Two major differences. (1) Topology: the MI502 uses closed-loop digital Class D amplification with a switching power supply — highly efficient, low heat output, no Autoformer™ transformer unlike the MC152 that uses analog Class A/B topology. (2) Power and form factor: the MI502 delivers 500 W per channel into 8 ohms (800 W into 4 ohms) in a 9.8 kg 2U rackmount chassis. The MC152 delivers 150 W per channel into 2/4/8 ohms in a heavier non-rackmount chassis with the classic McIntosh hi-fi look. For a rack installation and maximum per-channel power, the MI502. For a classic living-room hi-fi chain, the MC series (MC152, MC312, MC462, etc.).

Which McIntosh partners are recommended with the MI502?

McIntosh explicitly recommends several partners. On the home theater side: the MX124 or MX200 processor, or the MHT300 receiver (7.2 expandable to 7.2.4). On the distributed audio side: the CR106 preamplifier/matrix (2-channel 6-zone, expandable to 30 zones via Dante®). For protection: the MIP200 power controller. For in-wall speakers: WS500 and WS300, and CS200 in-ceiling. Within the same Custom Install range, the MI502 also naturally combines with the other amplifiers — MI254 (4 channels) to complete a 6-channel hi-fi system, MI347 (7 channels) for a 5.1 or 7.1 home theater with the MI502 reinforcing the fronts, MI128 (8 channels) or MI1250 (12 channels) for an extended multi-zone system. 12V Power Control port for synchronization with a preamplifier, processor, or third-party home automation controller.
