Silicon Acrylic Platter With Magnetic Suspended Bearing

Is the MT10 hard to install? What adjustments remain to be made?

The MT10 is deliberately designed to minimize the setup phase. McIntosh presets the three delicate parameters at the factory: tracking force, anti-skate, and cartridge position. On receipt, you simply: (1) install the platter on its magnetic bearing, (2) level the chassis using the adjustable feet, (3) connect the external power supply, (4) connect RCA cables to the MC phono input of your preamp or integrated amplifier, (5) connect the grounding wire to avoid hum. The tonearm azimuth adjustment (lateral angle of the stylus) is also possible but optional — it allows further optimization for the most demanding users. Which playback speeds are supported?

The MT10 supports three speeds: 33-1/3 rpm for 12-inch LPs, 45 rpm for 45s (singles) and 12-inch 45 rpm records (maxi-singles), and 78 rpm for legacy 78 rpm records. It requires a phono preamp or integrated amplifier with an MC-compatible phono input (not MM — MC output is roughly 10 times lower than MM). Recommended options: the McIntosh MP100 (dedicated phono preamp with adjustable MM AND MC inputs — the ideal external solution, with 6 MC load settings from 25 to 1,000 Ω), or a McIntosh preamp with a built-in MC phono stage (C22 Mk V, C2800, C12000), or a McIntosh integrated amplifier with an MC phono input (MA12000, MA9500, MA2375). Caution: the McIntosh MSA5500 and the McIntosh MA352 have MM phono inputs only — they cannot directly drive the MT10 without the MP100 or an external MC preamp.

Does the MT10 have balanced XLR outputs?

No. Unlike some competing high-end turntables, the MT10 offers 1 unbalanced stereo RCA output on the rear panel — no balanced XLR output. That's the classic hi-fi format compatible with the vast majority of phono preamps and integrated amps with phono inputs on the market. The separate grounding wire connects to the preamp's ground terminal to eliminate ground loops and hum. If you want a balanced XLR link between the turntable and your main preamp, the solution is to add an external phono preamp with XLR outputs — for example the McIntosh MP100, which offers both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs.
