Description

9-Driver Acoustic Architecture

The internal design of the Beam Ultra relies on nine distinct drivers, each powered by its own Class D digital amplifier. The configuration includes four low-profile woofers for warm, punchy bass, one forward-firing mid tweeter for a smooth center image, two side-firing horn-loaded mid tweeters for stereo separation, and two upward-firing tweeters loaded into a directional horn for the height channels. That is four more drivers than the Beam Gen 2.

True Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 Spatialization

Unlike previous generations that simulated height effects through software processing, the Beam Ultra features actual upward-firing drivers. The architecture delivers seven ear-level channels, one bass channel, and two height channels for physical three-dimensional immersion — not a software approximation. Effects that pan across or come from above the screen are localized with precision in a normal-sized room.

Dialogue Clarity and AI Speech Enhancement

The center channel features a dedicated design that separates dialogue from sound effects and music. An AI Speech Enhancement system adds four levels of vocal enhancement, adjustable in the Sonos app: from light boosting for everyday listening to marked emphasis for complex scenes or hearing-impaired listeners. All without compromising the overall musical balance.

Trueplay Acoustic Calibration

A far-field microphone array with beamforming and multichannel echo cancellation powers the Trueplay system, which measures how sound reflects off the walls and furniture of your room and then automatically adjusts EQ from the Sonos app. Compatible with iOS and Android. The result: a balanced sound whatever the installation position (low cabinet, wall mount, bookshelf).

Connectivity and Positioning in the Sonos Lineup

On the connectivity side: HDMI eARC input for the TV (cable included), Wi-Fi 6 for network streaming, Bluetooth for direct playback from a mobile device, and AirPlay 2 for the Apple ecosystem. Within the Sonos lineup, the Beam Ultra sits between the Beam Gen 2 (5 drivers, virtualized Atmos) and the Arc Ultra (flagship, larger format), for listeners who want true Atmos without the imposing size of an Arc Ultra. It can also be expanded with a pair of Sonos speakers as surround channels and a Sonos Sub for a complete multichannel system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the Sonos Beam Ultra?

The Beam Ultra is the reference compact soundbar for getting true Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 without the format of an Arc Ultra. It integrates nine drivers powered by nine Class D amplifiers, including two upward-firing tweeters that generate the height channels physically rather than through software virtualization. Combined with the optimized center channel and AI speech enhancement, it delivers both an immersive cinematic scene and perfectly intelligible dialogue.

What does the 9-driver architecture bring over the Beam Gen 2?

The Beam Gen 2 uses 5 drivers and simulates height effects through software processing. The Beam Ultra adds 4 more drivers — including two upward-firing tweeters loaded into a directional horn — to produce genuine physical height channels. It also adds two horn-loaded side tweeters to widen the stereo scene, and the four low-profile woofers produce notably warmer bass than the Gen 2.

How does Trueplay calibration work?

Trueplay uses the soundbar's built-in microphone array (with beamforming and multichannel echo cancellation) to measure how sound reflects off the walls and furniture of your room. The Sonos app then applies an EQ correction tailored to your specific installation. The calibration works equally well for placement on a low cabinet or wall mounting, and is done in a few minutes from an iOS or Android device.

Which connections and services are supported?

The Beam Ultra has an HDMI eARC input (cable included) for connecting to the TV, with support for Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, and multichannel PCM streams. It also offers Wi-Fi 6 for network streaming, Bluetooth for direct playback from a mobile device, and AirPlay 2 for the Apple ecosystem. It integrates with all Sonos-compatible streaming services.

How does it compare to the Sonos Arc Ultra?

The Arc Ultra is the flagship: larger, with more drivers and a 9.1.4 architecture (vs 7.1.2 on the Beam Ultra). It suits larger rooms and no-compromise home cinema systems. The Beam Ultra offers the same true physical Atmos concept, but in a compact format suited to standard living rooms. For a 55 to 75 inch TV in a normal-sized room, the Beam Ultra is often the better-sized choice.
