The Entry Point into Sonus faber Bookshelf Speakers

The Lumina II is the bookshelf model of the Lumina collection, Sonus faber's entry-level passive lineup. Its proposition rests on one principle: give access to the house acoustic technologies and Italian manufacturing in a compact format at an accessible price. At 30.4 cm tall and 5.8 kg per speaker, it installs anywhere — on dedicated stands, on a solid bookshelf, on a desk, or as a surround channel in a Lumina home cinema. Hand-built in the Sonus faber workshops in Vicenza, Italy.

29 mm DAD™ Tweeter Shared with the Sonetto Collection

The tweeter is a 29 mm DAD™ (Damped Apex Dome) silk dome with a hand-coated Kurtmueller diaphragm, ferrite motor, and visco-elastic baffle decoupling. This driver is the same as the one used in the Sonetto collection (Sonus faber's mid-range tier) and in the other Lumina models. The concrete result: the Lumina II delivers the same signature in the highs — smooth, airy, non-fatiguing — as significantly more expensive models.

150 mm Midwoofer Developed for the Lumina II

The 150 mm (6") midwoofer was designed specifically for the Lumina II. It uses a custom-made basket and a diaphragm composed of cellulose pulp blended with other natural fibers — a material signature that extends the Natural Sound philosophy proper to Sonus faber. It covers the entire midrange and bass down to 55 Hz, with a single crossover at 1,800 Hz to the tweeter.

Front-Firing Bass-Reflex Port: Flexible Placement

The bass-reflex port is placed on the front face of the Lumina II. This architectural choice changes everything in real use: placement close to a back wall, in a corner, on a bookshelf, or on a low cabinet all work without the loss of bass definition that affects rear-ported designs. Sonus faber states that the Lumina II delivers powerful and nuanced sound even when placed close to a back wall. A concrete advantage for small rooms where ideal placement is not possible.

Amplitude-and-Phase-Optimized Crossover at 1,800 Hz

The crossover network is a single crossover point at 1,800 Hz, optimized for aligned amplitude and phase response — the traditional Sonus faber philosophy applied here in its most direct form. Components selected in the Hi-Fi category.

4 Nickel-Plated Terminals, Rubber Decoupling Pads

The Lumina II features four nickel-plated binding posts (Hi and Mid-Low pairs), which allow bi-wiring or bi-amplification — a flexibility uncommon at this level of the range. Decoupling from the mounting surface is provided by included rubber pads (no spikes, unlike the floorstanders in the same collection).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the Sonus faber Lumina II?

The Lumina II is the entry point into Sonus faber bookshelf loudspeakers. It gives access to the house signature DAD™ tweeter (identical to the one in the Sonetto collection) and Italian manufacturing in Vicenza, in a compact format (30.4 cm, 5.8 kg per speaker) at an accessible price. The front-firing bass-reflex port makes its placement remarkably flexible — it works well even near a back wall or on a bookshelf.

What is the difference from the Sonetto II G2?

The Sonetto II G2 is the equivalent bookshelf model in the Sonetto collection (the tier above). It uses a different version of the DAD tweeter (Arrow Point 28 mm with copper shorting ring), a 6.5" midwoofer on an organic basket, Intono technology (acoustic chamber isolated from the port), and a lute-shaped cabinet. Its response reaches down to 42 Hz versus 55 Hz on the Lumina II. The Lumina II keeps the standard DAD tweeter and a squared cabinet at a significantly more accessible price; the Sonetto II G2 refines the architecture for listeners who want more extension and sophistication.

Can it be placed near a wall or on a bookshelf?

Yes, without difficulty. The bass-reflex port fires to the front (instead of the rear), which makes it noticeably less sensitive to placement than most bookshelf loudspeakers. It delivers powerful, nuanced sound near a back wall, in a corner, on a low cabinet, or on a bookshelf. A clearance of 10 to 20 cm is still recommended for the most open soundstage.

Which amplifier should I choose?

The Lumina II has 86 dB sensitivity and 4 Ω nominal impedance. Sonus faber recommends a power range of 30 to 150 W per channel, which makes it compatible with most mid-range integrated amps and with many low- to medium-power tube amplifiers. A quality integrated from 30 W is enough to showcase it. The four nickel-plated binding posts also allow bi-wiring.

Is a dedicated stand necessary?

For serious stereo listening, a rigid stand that places the tweeter at ear height is highly recommended. Decoupling is provided by the included rubber pads. A solid bookshelf, dense cabinet, or thick console are acceptable alternatives. The Lumina II also works very well as a surround channel in a home cinema based on the Lumina V or III as fronts.
