Description

The Flagship Floorstander of the New Olympica G3 Generation

The Olympica G3 V is the flagship floorstander of Sonus faber's new Olympica G3 generation, a complete redesign of the Olympica lineage that succeeds the Nova series. It sits at the top of the Olympica G3 range (above the G3 III and G3 II), and within the Sonus faber catalog it fits between the Sonetto collection and the flagship Homage collection. All of the G3 V's key acoustic technologies are derived from the Suprema reference system. Hand-built in the historic Vicenza workshops in Italy.

28 mm DAD Arrow Point Silk Tweeter with Extended Frequency Response

High frequencies are handled by the 28 mm Damped Apex Dome (DAD) tweeter in Arrow Point configuration, in its extended-frequency version reaching 40 kHz — 5 kHz higher than the previous Olympica Nova generation. Localized damping applied to the apex of the silk dome prevents the anti-phase behavior that affects soft domes at high excursion, without hardening the top-end character.

165 mm Camelia Midrange in Sealed Cork Chamber

The midrange is handled by the 165 mm Camelia driver, developed by Sonus faber for the Suprema reference system and integrated in the higher Homage models. Its treated paper membrane, inspired by the geometry of the camellia flower, deliberately breaks the circular resonance modes that affect standard cones. This driver is housed in a sealed acoustic chamber lined with cork, an organic material with superior damping properties that isolates the midrange from the pressure generated by the woofers. Result: voices and acoustic instruments reproduced with a natural timbre, without contamination from the bass register.

Three 165 mm Woofers in Stealth Ultraflex

Low frequencies are driven by three 165 mm treated paper cone woofers (same diameter as the Camelia midrange, which simplifies acoustic coupling at the 370 Hz crossover). They are loaded in the Stealth Ultraflex bass-reflex system, an optimized-profile port integrated into the rear spine of the cabinet that minimizes audible turbulence. Compared to the G3 III (two 165 mm woofers), the G3 V's third bass driver significantly increases radiating surface area and available sound pressure for large listening rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why choose the Sonus faber Olympica G3 V?

The Olympica G3 V is the flagship floorstander of the new Olympica G3 generation, derived from the Suprema reference system. It combines the 28 mm DAD Arrow Point extended-frequency silk tweeter, the 165 mm Camelia midrange housed in a sealed cork chamber, and three 165 mm woofers in Stealth Ultraflex. High 90 dB sensitivity, response down to 37 Hz, signature Sonus faber lute-shaped cabinet with real wood veneer, hand-stitched leather top and aluminum details. Hand-built in Vicenza; designed for demanding large listening rooms.

What is the difference between the Olympica G3 V and the Olympica Nova V (previous generation)?

The G3 generation is a complete redesign of the Olympica range, derived from the technologies of the Suprema reference system. The main differences vs. Nova V: (1) 165 mm Camelia paper cone midrange in a sealed cork chamber instead of the Nova's 150 mm CCAW voice coil; (2) three 165 mm paper cone woofers (same diameter as the midrange for more coherent acoustic coupling) instead of the Nova's three 180 mm sandwich-cone woofers; (3) DAD Arrow Point tweeter in extended-frequency version reaching 40 kHz instead of 35 kHz; (4) crossovers at 370 Hz and 2,390 Hz instead of 250 Hz and 2,500 Hz — the Camelia midrange takes on a larger portion of the lower midrange; (5) frequency response 37 – 40 kHz instead of 35 – 35 kHz; (6) recommended power 50 – 400 W instead of 60 – 400 W. Format, sensitivity (90 dB), impedance (4 Ω), and weight (44 kg) remain identical.

What amplifier is appropriate?

The Olympica G3 V presents a nominal 4 Ω load and a high 90 dB sensitivity (2.83 V at 1 m). Sonus faber recommends a power range of 50 to 400 W per channel. The high sensitivity allows for comfortable volume with a good integrated amplifier from 50 W, but the three 165 mm woofers in Stealth Ultraflex loading benefit greatly from a high-current amplifier. A reference solid-state power block or a higher-power tube amplifier with dedicated 4 Ω output taps will maintain the best control over the low-frequency section. Four binding posts allow bi-wiring or bi-amplification.

How far from the walls should it be placed?

The Stealth Ultraflex vent efficiently manages airflow, but the Olympica G3 V generates substantial acoustic energy down to 37 Hz. A clearance of at least 50 to 80 cm from the rear wall is recommended to avoid unwanted amplification of room resonances in the bass. Placing it too close to corners will artificially inflate the low frequencies. For large listening rooms, a distance of about 1 meter from the wall optimizes the soundstage. Experimentation with toe-in allows you to fine-tune focus.

How does it compare to the Olympica G3 III?

The G3 V and G3 III share the same key acoustic architecture (DAD Arrow Point extended-frequency tweeter, 165 mm Camelia midrange in sealed cork chamber, 165 mm woofers in Stealth Ultraflex). The differences are in sizing: the G3 V adds a third woofer (three instead of two), gains 7 cm in height and 7 cm in depth, weighs 9 kg more (44 vs 35 kg), and extends down to 37 Hz instead of 42 Hz. The G3 V suits large rooms (30–60 m² or more); the G3 III remains optimal for medium to large rooms (20–40 m²).
