Description

300 W Per Channel Into 2, 4, or 8 Ohm Loads

The McIntosh MC312 delivers 300 W continuous per channel into speakers of virtually any nominal impedance — 2, 4, or 8 ohms — through two dedicated McIntosh Autoformer™ output transformers. The Autoformer™ technology, developed by McIntosh since 1949, allows the amplifier to deliver its full rated power across all common speaker impedances with no compromise; a conventional single-output-impedance amplifier could give up as much as half of its power on a mismatched load. The MC312 is therefore a natural match for virtually any domestic hi-fi loudspeaker — from power-hungry floorstanders to low-sensitivity audiophile bookshelves.

Filter Capacity Doubled, Dynamic Headroom +27% vs the Previous Model

The MC312 succeeds the previous McIntosh 300 W stereo amplifier with several measurable improvements. The most notable: filter capacity has been doubled, which increased dynamic headroom by 27% — from 1.8 dB to 2.3 dB. That evolution lets the amplifier handle the most violent musical transients (cymbal crash, kick drum, sharp orchestral attacks) without dynamic compression or audible distortion. Low-frequency performance and distortion prevention also benefit from the increased current reserves. Rated total harmonic distortion 0.005%, remarkable 120 dB signal-to-noise on the balanced XLR input (118 dB on the unbalanced RCA input), damping factor greater than 40 across the audio band (Wideband). Frequency response +0/-0.25 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0/-3 dB from 10 Hz to 100 kHz).

Power Guard®, Sentry Monitor™, Solid Cinch™ Speaker Posts

The MC312 carries the McIntosh proprietary protection circuits. Power Guard® monitors the input signal continuously and dynamically adjusts gain at near-speed-of-light response to prevent hard clipping of the output stage — critical for tweeter protection and for preserving signal quality at high listening levels. Sentry Monitor™ is a fuse-less short-circuit protection circuit that disengages the output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels, then automatically resets once conditions return to normal — no fuse in the signal path, no associated sonic degradation. Patented gold-plated Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts accept bare wire, banana plugs, or spade lugs, and clamp down firmly by hand for an optimal electrical contact that doesn't loosen over time.

XLR and RCA Outputs in Addition to Inputs: Bi-Wiring, Sub, Secondary System

New vs the previous McIntosh 300 W stereo amplifier: the MC312 provides balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs in addition to its XLR and RCA inputs. These outputs open several use cases: bi-amping or tri-amping of multi-way loudspeakers (with the addition of a second McIntosh amplifier), connection to a secondary hi-fi system if your preamplifier is short on outputs, or driving a powered subwoofer that takes its signal from the power amplifier rather than the preamp. A meaningful gain in installation flexibility.

Direct LED Illumination, Autoformer™ Enclosures With Glass Inserts

The MC312 keeps the immediately recognizable McIntosh look — black glass front panel with silk-screened graphics, illuminated logo, control knobs, aluminum end caps, and a pair of fast-responding blue watt meters — with several visual updates. Front-panel illumination now uses Direct LED backlighting rather than fiber-optic, which improves color accuracy and durability. The McIntosh Autoformer™ transformers, which flank the power transformer, now sit in new enclosures topped by a single cover with glass inserts showing the wiring diagram of each transformer — a deliberate McIntosh visual signature.

Monogrammed Heatsinks™, Eco Auto Power-Off, and Power Control

The MC312 also brings several improvements that affect everyday use: McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks™ have been added for more efficient passive thermal dissipation, and an eco-friendly power management system turns the amplifier off after a programmable interval with no input signal to save energy. 3.5 mm Power Control input and output ports for synchronized power-on and power-off with other McIntosh components (CD player, turntable, tuner, network streamer). Push-Pull Complementary circuit, Autoformer™ output, polished stainless steel and black painted steel chassis; dimensions 17-1/2 × 9-7/16 × 22 in. (44.5 × 24.0 × 55.9 cm, including feet/front panel/handles/cables); 105 lb (47.6 kg).

Awards and Position in the McIntosh Stereo Lineup

The MC312 was named Best Stereo Power Amplifier of 2019 by Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity — "This just may be all the amplifier you will ever need!" NOVO Magazine wrote: "perhaps the finest, most sophisticated amplifier I have heard in its price range in my system." In the McIntosh solid-state stereo power amplifier lineup, the MC312 sits above the MC152 (150 W x 2, also Autoformer™) and below the MC462 (450 W x 2, also Autoformer™ and Quad Balanced). It is McIntosh's central stereo amplifier: serious power and comfortable dynamic reserve, without stepping up to the footprint and price of the MC462.

Common Questions

Which speaker binding post (2, 4, or 8 ohms) should I use?

Connect each speaker to the tap that matches its nominal impedance as rated by the manufacturer. Thanks to the McIntosh Autoformer™ transformers, the MC312 delivers its full 300 W on any of these three taps — no compromise, no additional distortion, no output-stage overheating. The patented Solid Cinch™ binding posts accept bare wire, banana plugs, or spade lugs.

What are the MC312's XLR and RCA outputs for?

These outputs, absent on the previous McIntosh 300 W stereo amplifier, open several use cases. Bi-amping or tri-amping: sending the signal to a second McIntosh amplifier dedicated to the midrange or treble section of a multi-way loudspeaker pair. Connection to a secondary hi-fi system (for example in another room) if your preamplifier is short on outputs. Driving a powered subwoofer that takes its signal from the power amplifier instead of the preamp. A meaningful gain in installation flexibility.

Which McIntosh preamplifier is recommended with the MC312?

McIntosh recommends the C49 stereo preamplifier as the natural partner for the MC312 (mid-range solid-state preamp). Other McIntosh preamplifiers remain compatible depending on budget and aesthetic goals. Additional recommended McIntosh partners: the DS200 streaming DAC, the MP100 phono preamplifier (for vinyl playback), the MT5 turntable, the MCD350 SACD/CD player, the MQ112 environmental equalizer, the MEN220 room correction system, the MPC500 power controller, and the ML1 Mk II or XR100 loudspeakers for a fully McIntosh system.

What's the difference between the MC312 and the MC152 or MC462?

All three are McIntosh solid-state stereo amplifiers with Autoformer™ output. The MC152 delivers 150 W x 2 and the MC462 delivers 450 W x 2 (plus Quad Balanced topology); the MC312 sits between them at 300 W x 2. Choose the MC152 for a more modest system (normal-sensitivity speakers, medium room), the MC312 for driving more demanding loudspeakers or a larger room, and the MC462 for very current-hungry speakers, large listening rooms, or the listener who wants McIntosh's maximum single-chassis stereo power reserve.
