A No-Compromise, All-Tube Headphone Amplifier

The McIntosh MHA200 is a compact headphone amplifier that puts McIntosh in an unusual role for the brand: designing a single-purpose component for personal headphone listening. It is a fully vacuum tube, fully analog amplifier — no built-in DAC, no speaker output section, no preamp output. One mission only: get the most out of audiophile-grade hi-fi headphones, whatever their impedance. The MHA200 is the only headphone amplifier in the McIntosh lineup, and it shares many physical design traits with the full-size McIntosh vacuum tube power amplifiers — the timeless MC275 and the MC1502.

 

Two Tube Pairs: 12AT7 (Signal) + 12BH7A (Power)

The MHA200's architecture sits on two pairs of dual-triode vacuum tubes: a pair of 12AT7s that amplify the incoming audio signal, and a pair of 12BH7As that supply the power to drive the headphones with low distortion. Each tube pair is protected by a cage that lets you see the tubes glowing in operation — the MHA200 doubles as a display piece. A protective tube cover is included for transport or cleaning.

 

Unity Coupled Circuit™ Transformers — McIntosh's Founding Technology From 1949

The MHA200 carries a pair of Unity Coupled Circuit™ output transformers — this is the original McIntosh technology, the one the brand was founded on in 1949, and the one that still equips today's McIntosh vacuum tube power amplifiers the MC275 and the MC1502. The Unity Coupled Circuit™ transformers were custom-designed and manufactured to match the tube amplifier section to the headphone output section, ensuring maximum power transfer regardless of the connected load. Rather than adapting the output to the headphone impedance through voltage gain at the input stage, the Unity Coupled Circuit™ transformer secondaries make sure the MHA200's full power is available across the entire impedance range.

 

LOAD Knob: Four Impedance Ranges From 32 to 1,000 Ohms, 500 mW Per Range

A dedicated front-panel LOAD knob selects the impedance range that matches your headphones. Four ranges are available: 32-100 ohms, 100-250 ohms, 250-600 ohms, and 600-1,000 ohms — all deliver 500 mW per channel. This is a meaningful point: most contemporary hi-fi headphones, whether an easy-to-drive model or a more demanding one, fall into one of these four ranges. Voltage gain automatically changes with the selected range: 12 dB at 32 Ω, 17 dB at 100 Ω, 21 dB at 250 Ω, 25 dB at 600 Ω.

 

Three Front-Panel Headphone Outputs: 4-Pin XLR, Pair of 3-Pin XLR, 1/4-Inch

Three headphone output formats are provided on the front panel to accommodate most audiophile headphone cables on the market. A 4-pin XLR connector accepts a single-cable balanced stereo termination (the most common format in modern high-end headphone cables). A pair of 3-pin XLR connectors accepts separate left and right balanced cables (the historical high-end format, still common with some manufacturers). A standard 1/4-inch stereo jack accepts classic unbalanced cables. All three outputs can be used simultaneously — one headphone can stay plugged into 4-pin XLR while another is plugged into the 1/4-inch jack.

 

VOLUME Knob With Unity Gain Point: Fixed DAC Direct, No Preamp Required

The MHA200 has a front-panel VOLUME knob with a dual role. Standard use: VOLUME serves as the headphone volume control when the MHA200 is fed by a fixed-level source (for example a DAC, a tuner, or an SACD/CD player without a variable output) — the MHA200 then acts as a headphone preamplifier + volume control. With an upstream analog preamplifier: the MHA200's VOLUME should be set to the center Unity Gain point, and the volume is controlled by the upstream preamplifier. That flexibility lets the MHA200 fit into almost any existing hi-fi configuration.

 

Rear Connectivity and McIntosh System Integration

The MHA200's rear panel offers two analog inputs: one balanced XLR input (2.0 V RMS sensitivity, 16 V maximum input signal, 20 kΩ input impedance) and one unbalanced RCA input (1.0 V RMS sensitivity, 8 V maximum, 10 kΩ impedance). The MHA200's compact chassis and its balanced inputs let you place the unit close to the listening position, with long balanced cables running back to the preamplifier or the DAC without signal loss. 3.5 mm Power Control input and output ports synchronize power-on and power-off with the rest of a McIntosh stack (preamplifier, SACD/CD player, turntable, network streamer, etc.). Custom high-performance toroidal power transformer with low mechanical hum and low magnetic field radiation delivers clean power to the tube stage.

 

Common Questions

 

How do I pick the right impedance range for my headphones?

The front-panel LOAD knob selects one of four ranges: 32-100 ohms, 100-250 ohms, 250-600 ohms, and 600-1,000 ohms. Check your headphone spec sheet for the nominal impedance and set LOAD to the matching range. Thanks to the Unity Coupled Circuit™ transformers, the full 500 mW per channel remains available on all four ranges.

 

Can I connect a DAC or a digital source directly to the MHA200?

The MHA200 is a fully analog amplifier — it does not include an integrated DAC. A digital source (computer, streamer, SACD/CD transport, TV) must go through an external DAC that then feeds the MHA200's XLR or RCA analog inputs. The McIntosh MDA200 (standalone McIntosh D/A converter) is a natural partner to the MHA200 for a headphone-centric hi-fi system. The MHA200's VOLUME knob can then act as the main volume control — no analog preamplifier needed in the chain.

 

What is the difference between the 3-pin and 4-pin XLR outputs?

Both formats deliver a full balanced connection — the only difference is connector geometry. The 4-pin XLR is a single connector that accepts a single-cable balanced stereo headphone cable. It is the most common format in modern high-end headphone cables. The pair of 3-pin XLRs accepts two separate cables: one 3-pin XLR for the left channel, one for the right. It is the historical high-end format, still used by some manufacturers. Pick whichever format matches the cable supplied or custom-made for your headphones.
