The Compact Active Speaker System of the New L/R Range

The Cambridge Audio L/R S is the compact model of the new L/R active-speaker range, which also includes the larger L/R M and L/R X (with integrated Wi-Fi network connectivity and streaming). The L/R S focuses on direct wired and Bluetooth listening for a desktop, bedroom, or small family room. The primary speaker houses all the amplification and connections; the secondary is powered via the included Speaker Link cable.

Class D Amplification 4 x 25 W and Per-Speaker Drivers

The integrated Class D amplification delivers 4 x 25 W into 4 Ω (100 W total, with a dedicated amp per driver). Each speaker features a 21 mm aluminium dome tweeter and a 3 in (76 mm) polypropylene cone mid-woofer, in a ported bass-reflex loading. Frequency response 60 Hz – 20 kHz ±3 dB; signal-to-noise ratio greater than 104 dB (A-weighted); distortion (THD+N at 1 W, 1 kHz) of 0.05%.

Complete Digital and Wireless Connectivity

The primary speaker receives a TOSLINK optical input (16/24-bit up to 96 kHz PCM), a USB-C Audio input (16/24-bit up to 96 kHz PCM) for computers and compatible Android phones, an analogue RCA line-level auxiliary input, and a Bluetooth 5.1 receiver with support for SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX HD codecs. A dedicated mono RCA output allows an external powered subwoofer to be added (low frequencies are then redirected to the subwoofer to relieve the mid-woofers).

What is the difference between the L/R S, L/R M, and L/R X?

The three models share the same active desktop/stand-mount system philosophy, but at different scales. The L/R S (this model) is the most compact, designed for small spaces with 4 x 25 W and a 3-inch mid-woofer. The larger L/R M and L/R X (sold separately) feature bigger drivers, higher power, and integrate Wi-Fi network connectivity for streaming (Spotify, TIDAL, etc.). Choose the L/R S for direct wired or Bluetooth listening in a small space; the L/R M or X for a larger room with native streaming.

Can the L/R S be connected to a television?

Yes, the TOSLINK optical input is ideal for receiving audio from a television (up to 24-bit/96 kHz PCM). Combined with the Movie or Voice preset on the remote, the L/R S is a superior alternative to an entry-level soundbar. Adding a powered subwoofer via the dedicated mono RCA output allows you to build a highly capable 2.1 home theater system in a small room.

What do the Desk top and Position modes do?

Two switches adapt the speaker behavior to the installation environment. Desktop mode, activated when the speakers rest directly on a desk, reduces midrange energy and adjusts tweeter time alignment to compensate for desk surface reflections. The Position switch offers two settings: Free space (more than 20 cm from a wall) provides the natural tuning, and Near wall (against or very near a wall) compensates for boundary reinforcement to prevent bass from becoming too generous.
