The Cambridge Audio L/R X is the flagship of the new L/R active-speaker range. Designed for larger rooms and demanding listeners, the L/R X pushes what the L/R range offers further: a bigger cabinet, larger drivers, more generous amplification, and a set of audio-processing features exclusive to the flagship. Like the rest of the range, the L/R X is a true all-in-one solution: it replaces an integrated amplifier, a network streamer, a phono preamplifier, and the associated cables in a two-speaker set.

800 W Class D Amplification and 64-Bit Audio Processing

Each speaker packs 400 W of dedicated Class D amplification, for a total of 800 W across the pair — more than double the L/R M's output. The new 64-bit audio-processing engine, exclusive to the L/R X within the range, delivers increased precision and dynamic range while driving DynamEQ, room acoustics optimisation, and speaker protection. The result: absolute control, minimal distortion, and the ability to fill large living rooms without audible compression.

28 mm Torus Tweeter and Dual 5" Woofers

Cambridge Audio's signature 28 mm Torus tweeter — dual-radius aluminium dome, dedicated waveguide, phase ring, and optimised rear chamber — is paired here with two 5-inch (125 mm) woofers, larger than the 4-inch drivers in the L/R M. This 2.5-way configuration delivers detailed highs, a wide soundstage, and a transparent midrange with the foundation and output required for larger rooms.

Side-Mounted 6" Force-Canceling Passive Radiators

To reach 35 Hz ±3 dB extension, the engineering team incorporated two 6-inch passive radiators (larger than the L/R M's 4.75-inch) mounted back-to-back on the sides of each speaker. This force-canceling configuration offers two benefits: mechanical vibrations generated by one radiator are canceled by the opposing force of the other (the cabinet remains acoustically inert, even at high excursion), and the total radiating surface increases without requiring a massive cabinet. Result: linear, articulate bass down to 35 Hz, often without needing an auxiliary subwoofer. Note: allow side clearance so the radiators can breathe.

The L/R M adds the StreamMagic Gen 4 platform, triples the power (300 W), uses the 28 mm Torus tweeter, and integrates HDMI eARC + MM phono, with 4-inch woofers and 40 Hz extension. The L/R X (this model) is the flagship: bigger cabinet, 5-inch woofers, 6-inch passive radiators, 800 W total, 35 Hz extension, plus 64-bit processing, DynamEQ, and room acoustics optimisation. Choose the L/R S for a desk or small room, the L/R M for a medium-to-large room, and the L/R X for large rooms requiring maximum output and extension.

Can I connect my turntable directly?

Yes. The primary speaker features a moving magnet (MM) phono preamplifier designed by Cambridge Audio, with a dedicated ground terminal. You plug the RCA cables from your MM-equipped turntable straight into the rear of the L/R X, without needing a separate phono stage. For a moving coil (MC) cartridge, you would need to add an external MC preamplifier (for example the Cambridge Audio Alva Duo).

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes, even though the L/R X already reaches 35 Hz without one. A dedicated Sub Out mono RCA output lets you connect an external powered subwoofer. Room acoustics optimisation tailors the response to the room size, distance to walls, and nature of the surrounding surfaces; a complementary surface-compensation control lets you tame a room that sounds too bright (hard, reverberant surfaces) or too dull (thick carpets, fabrics, bookshelves).
